(Blue) Smelter Demon Information

"The Old Iron King's life was taken by a mass of iron that had been given a soul. Was this metal goliath there from the beginning, or was it a product of the king's conceit?"

The Blue Smelter Demon in Iron Passage, also known as the Aged Smelter Demon, is powered by magic instead of Fire. It is highly resistant to Magic and vulnerable to Dark and Lightning damage.

Description

Counter Measures

Jumping Plunge Jumps high in the air above player stabbing downwards. If the player approaches him after he has landed he will do a explosive AOE. This combo can be lethal. As soon as he jumps, run or dodge backwards to distance yourself. The actual area he strikes is quite small.
Double Horizontal Slash Slow double slash that goes from player's left to right followed by a return slash from right to left. This double combo is often followed by his Stabbing Lunge or Jumping Slam. Though the demon's arc is very wide, his reach is relatively small. Dodge to the left to roll under the first swing, and then dodge away from the demon to escape the reach of the second swing. Be wary of a third, vertical attack.
Alternatively: block with Rebel's Greatshield

Horizontal then Vertical Cleave

Swings his sword from player's right to left and then follows it with a Vertical Cleave. Roll right when he swing, and then roll once again.

Stabbing Lunge

Very fast stab with a long reach. This can be difficult because it is significantly faster than his other attacks and can throw a player off balance. Roll sideward.

Vertical Cleave

Raises his sword above his head with two hands and cleaves downward. Once his sword is on fire this attack sends out a flaming vertical arc that travels along the ground, similar to the dragon tail weapons from Dark Souls 1. Has a long delay, different from the other attacks, making dodge timing critical. Before his sword is aflame, you can escape the demon's reach with relative ease by rolling away from him. Once lit however, the flaming arc will reach you at any distance, so dodging to the side makes for a more effective escape.
Once the attack is dodge, you can heal or buff weapon at this brief second.
In either state, this attack has a delay to it that can cause the player to dodge too early, leaving them vulnerable.

Single Horizontal Slash

Can come from either player's left or right

Fight Notes:

  • During the fight he will roar with an AOE and stoke his magic flame, this will add a constant low damage burning "aura" (like Immolation ) to his person (on very few instances he CAN skip this part), additionally the room becomes darker and he becomes brighter. After expanding his magic flame he will stab himself with his sword doing no damage to himself but lighting his sword on fire. This greatly increases the damage his sword does.
  • In case he skipped the Immolation part he will still light his sword on fire at any given time the only difference is you he will do no Immolation damage (confirmed/witnessed 2 times on PS3) throughout the fight.
  • He seems to be able to delay every possible part of his Slash attacks. (Confirmed by at least 4 different users)

Strategy

He has the same moveset as Smelter Demon , albeit his attacks deal a percentual magic damage instead of fire damage.

2 summons are available not far from the bonfire. Even though they increase the number of hits required to take the boss down, the fight becomes a lot easier provided the summons are not much worn out by the enemies on the way at the early walkthrough.

However, once the bonfire intensity reaches 3, the white phantoms will only hinder you since red phantom version of regular enemies started to spawn outside. Highly recommended to beef up items with high physical (and?) magic resistance while maintaining weight into below 50% so you can avoid being burdened by Promised Walk of Peace from Astrologist, items such as Rebel's Greatshield, Spell Quartz Ring, Ring of Steel Protection, Royal Soldier's Ring and Crypt Blacksword will be crucial for killing this boss at NG+2 or further. Oddly, Astrologist's Set is also a balanced Magic resistant clothing.

Magic Resistance

Having magic resistance can be important to this fight. You may approach this with a magic-infused greatshield, the watcher armor, etc. In order to succeed, it is recommended that you first observe the attacks to learn the patterns. They are noted on this page so you can know what is coming and try out the listed counter. Small Blue Burr can provide great help here.

Poison Strategy (Pyromancy)

  • This fight is a "Who lives longer" fight. Wrong! The blue smelter demon is resistant to poison and toxic effects. (Actually, I was able to kill him with poison and toxic mist combined with a poison spotted whip.)
  • Please note this strategy has not been well-received, however some people prefer a slow endurance turtle fight.
  • He can be poisoned by using 2 toxic mists and it ticks with 15 damage to a max of 20% of his health. He usually gives you enough time to poison him after his attacks and placing a Warmth on the sides of the area is enough healing you need. Dont try to dodge his attacks as it is to risky if he does his 3 hit combo he will kill you after you dodge the first hit. Using a shield with high physical(100%) and magic defense (80%+)(Havels shield+5) is enough to only eat 50 damage of his 2nd phase which is healed by the warmth.
  • Another weakness this boss has is blunt weapons so a dragon tooth +5 with dark resins does a ton of damage to him, just don't get greedy and conserve stamina. Always use a havel greatshield infused with magic and at +5 if you're not confident in your rolls.
  • Defense is very very important so always have Black witch robes, or watcher armor for extra defense and lighter armor than most, spell quartz 3, dispelling ring +1 , Great Magic Barrier , constantly re-apply GMB and havels magic infused greatshield +5 (if you're not confident in your rolls)
  • Poison Infused Manslayer can be used to poison him in a few hits.

*There is no effort required at this boss if using hexs. With 30 ATN, 45 INT and FTH, use Dark Sunset Staff +5, the Drangelic Shield and stick to dark orb and dark fog as your spells. Make sure to get both phantoms in the iron passage for your backup. Once at the fight, hit him with dark fog twice once he focuses on your phantoms. After that, spam dark orb while making sure you keep some stamina for a quick roll. Rinse and repeat. Beat him my first try with this method. My weight was at 44.8% and I used the kings armour set with curved dragon sword +5 for a backup.

Dark Weapon Strategy

  • The Blue Smelter seems very weak to Dark, so dark infused weapons buffed with Dark Weapon or unenchanted weapon buffed Dark Pine Resin on your weapons will do quite a lot of damage to him.
  • Among all weapons, Dark Crypt Blacksword +5 buffed with Dark Weapon will be the best weapon against him, landing one handed light attack two times will land 1200 damage onto it at NG+2.
  • For more strategies for this boss fight, please check the Smelter Demon boss page, since these 2 fights are extremely similar.

Hints

  • Very resistant to sorcery, and extremely vulnerable to Dark. Vulnerable to Lightning. Possibly vulnerable to Magic weapon infusion.
  • Havel's Greatshield infused with Magic is very effective against this boss, since it has ~98% physical def and 100% magic def. Rebel's Greatshield is a good alternative if you don't meet the requirements for Havel's.
  • It may help to have a small blue burr item in your inventory to resist his magic.\

Trivia

  • Commonly referred to by the community as the "Blueberry".
  • The phrase "mass of iron" in his description is an allusion to Berserk.

The boss run back isn’t as bad as I thought it would be form hearing about it compared to the smelter demon in iron keep this is 100x better I’m at least able to run by while in iron keep I get stub lock out of the fog wall

For anyone wanting a tip. The alluring skull which can be bought from the cat in Majula distracts the skeleton guys in the run back.

To those of you who like Dark Souls 2. Why? Did somebody hurt you growing up? Were you abused in some way against your will? Like idk, this area is just self explanatory bad, (like many other). I've been familiar with Ds2 for nearly 10 years, and this area's existence has always made me ponder just what can be greenlit in gaming. A Netflix adaptation of Ds2 would be more welcoming and unsurprising than this steaming pile of dung slapped together with no thought.

It’s almost poetic that the only boss in Dark Souls 2 with a runback to rival Smelter Demon’s in terms of being dogshittingly awful enemy spam is the boss that is a direct copy-paste of Smelter Demon.

            • Anonymous

This is the only boss of the Iron DLC that I couldn't beat without a shield. Awful runback aside, it wasn't the Fume Knight, it wasn't Sir Alonne, it wasn't freaking Maldron, it was this guy.

WHOOPSIE DOODLE! THERE WAS A MIX-UP AT THE DLC FACTORY! WE MADE THE ENEMY COUNT WAAAAY TOO BIG AND THE SMELTER DEMON B-B-B-B-BLUE!

Why does this area exist? Maybe they had a quota of stuff they needed to add? The only thing added by this worthless level and reskin boss is extra data to download. Feels completely unnecessary.

Wish there was an alternative version of the smelter demon ste based on this one (no shoulder horn chest piece and a curved horn helmet)

This guide sucks. Why the duck are you suggesting we DON'T DODGE, and instead resort to using greatshields which most build not relying on STR can't wield? The strategy is cheesy and placing Warmth in such a small arena is pointlessly risky.

If you summon an NPC it is a pretty easy run, but bring ONLY one, so the boss will have less HP and it will focus only in max 2 directions with his 200° combos not 3. To get there, you can skip the first chamber, in the second lure the melees then run, third same, and you can skip the last chamber with a run again. Stay away from the boss's combos and hit it a couple of times. No sweat.

SH!TIEST RUN BACK IN THE HISTORY OF RUN BACK.

It wouldn't be bad if the enemies are just there to attack you, BUT THE DEV HAD TO PUT A HEXER WHO MADE YOU FAT ROLL!!!

Just beat this guy for the first time, and from the bottom of my heart, with no hint of irony: ****. THE. RUNBACK to this prick. Lazy boss redesign with the shittiest run back in Dark Souls 2. The other 2 bosses of the DLC were cool though :)

Beat him with giant warrior club+10 dark infused + dark weapon and both npcs summoned. Just ignore every enemy and head straight to the boss good luck! <3

Oh you hated that one really tough boss with the really awful bs runback? How about that same boss but with better stats and he's blue and with an absolutely goddamn hellish runback? ISN'T THAT FUUUUUUN?!

                                    • Anonymous

Hardest thing about this boss is the run back to it, if you haven't despawned all the enemies.

I think most of the dl2 dlc's have that for difficult than the actual bosses.

I mean look at sir alonne, frigit outskirts boss (forgot their names) their most difficult thing to deal with isn't the boss itself it's the area to get back to the boss.

Couldn't get poison to proc with poisoned daggers

Dark orbs did very little (NG+)

Weak to getting hit a lot with my uninfused great club. Fairly easy to roll around behind him, take a swing, repeat.

One of the most well designed bosses in the whole franchise. Been playing this game for years and hes still a challenge to me.

                                          • Anonymous

Pain in the ass to fight as a pure int sorcerer (deprived starting class). Had to upgrade a normal dagger to +10 (since I did not invest in agi/str/faith, this is the best physical weapon for a deprived int mage), then I tried to infuse it with enchanted (int scaling) even with 50 int, enchanted scaling only gave +10 damage (compared to not infused). So I had to change infusion to dark, which is very effective against this boss. +10 Dark (infuse) dagger. The fight was such a struggle (since I'm used to range fighting) the long run back to the boss (with a **** ton of ganker enemies) doesn't help also with this boss' reputation. After 30-40+ deaths managed to take it down. Thank you dark souls.

Yet another painful case of a boss with an utterly dogshit runback that is infinitely worse than actually fighting the boss itself

                                              • Anonymous

Fix the bullshit hitboxes on his attacks, and give him a reasonable runback (same applies to the first Smelter Demon in the base game) and you have a good boss.

                                                • Anonymous

Fight this bad boy underleveled and hollow where every attack one shots you for the true good pain experience. The run-up is dogshit tho, whoever thought that making one path unable to reach the archers and the other being a timed dodging event should be executed

                                                  • As a sorcerer this boss was kinda tough to take down so I changed to using hexes. Thankfully I had 20 faith to get the Sunset Staff from Felkin which I upgraded to +5. Changed my gear to Hexer's Hood and everthing else was Lion's mage gear for the faster cast speed as well as a Clear Bluestone Ring +1. Had Dark Orbs and Dark Hail but Dark Hail was a bit too slow for the boss to use usually. Had a Watchdragon Parma +10 which was extremely good at saving my ass when I failed to dodge correctly. Hope my experience helps any fellow sorcerers/hexers.

                                                    • Anonymous

Was this the demon that corrupted the Iron King? Or was it himself that was his undoing? Like FromSoftware always does, the truth will always be just barely out of reach

                                                      • Anonymous

Beat him first try, all you need to do is stack magic defense: Spell Quartz Ring +3, Dispelling Ring +1, and Black set had me at 612 magic resist. I equipped the Rebels greathshield not even upgraded but didnt need it too much, only thing to note is that he delays his attacks longer than the regular smelter, so hold your dodges a split second longer. He got melted by the roaring halberd w/ dark weapon.

                                                        • Anonymous

After burning through so many effigies, I got totally lucky: after killing the second NPC, and with about 50% of his life remaining, Blue just stood there and took my beating. I can't believe how long it took to kill him, even without him moving. Do I feel a little bad cheesing him like this? Maybe if it was the first or second time trying to beat him, but not on the tenth.

                                                          • Anonymous

This boss is NOT weak to Dark - my Dark Arrows with +10 hunter's blackbow did no significant damage against him. He indeed takes poison significant damage, but takes 7+ arrows.
The Blue Version visual of this boss is quite beautiful, but unfortunately it's Dark Souls 2, hotboxes are broken and the melee combat may be complicated. I gave up after he killed me with 2 attacks and just cheesed him using the npc summons and poison/dark arrows. (I do not recommend Dark arrows, but I only had poison and dark ones).

                                                            • Anonymous

Maybe these games turned me into a masochist, but the runup really isn't that bad - takes like 30-40 seconds and you usually shouldn't get hit by anything - the boss itself is pretty fun and feels good to dodge, just stay away when he kneels after a jump and keep a life gem active for last phase, other than that, pretty doable in 1-5 tries solo

                                                              • Anonymous

If it's junp w/no burst, he'll stand quickly. If it's jump w/burst, he'll wait for a bit while kneeling (I always run immediately after a jump, but these are my own observations)

                                                                • Anonymous

OMFG this the single worst boss in the game. THE WORST! I have to vent. First you have the atrocious run up, which would be bad enough with the many enemies, the great arrows and the lightning, but it also has to hit you with a spell to make you fat roll. But fine, ok, w/e. Not as bad as the Alonne run up. But the boss itself is insane. First off, it takes SO little damage. Even with a Dark Large Club +10, the damage you do is absolutely pathetic. Then to make it 10000X worse, the damage that HE does is...unreal. I have a full Havel set, Ring of Steel Protection +1, Small Blue Burr, Spell Quartz +3 and 37 VGR. Even with ALL that, you're dead in 2 to 3 hits. His attacks are just annoying. His jump attack; when he lands, SOMETIMES he'll do the magic explosion after, and sometimes he won't, and there seems to be no way to tell. So you just have to stay back just in case he does it and lose an attack window. Then when he buffs his sword, the range of it gets so comically long it's just not believable. His swings cover half or more of the tiny room you're in. You use a fast weapon, like a Dark Blacksmith's Hammer +10, which should do huge damage, especially with 50 STR, but no, it just tickles him. Or, you use a big slow weapon which will do more damage, but you take so damn long to recover after a swing that you can't get in more than 1 hit. What makes it even worse for me personally, is that I just finished getting the platinum for Souls III. Coming back to 2, I forgot how incredibly slow and stiff everything is. It feels like I'm playing in molasses. Idk how Fume Knight is so well known when this ******* is so much harder.

                                                                  • Anonymous

Fight for me is always a DPS race. Can I kill him before the NPC dies?

Also, for whatever reason, it seems easier to dodge his attacks by rolling right, rather than left.

                                                                    • Anonymous

The area before it is dogsht tho.
