Drakekeeper is an enemy in Dark Souls 2 (DKS2). Encountered at the Dragon Shrine, the Drakekeepers are formidable warriors clad in heavy armor, equipped with one of four load-outs. Their attacks, while powerful, can be countered effectively by dodging or maneuvering around them. Additionally, their slow movement speed makes them susceptible to ranged attacks. Enemies have their own behavior and unique attacks, killing enemies provide various drops that reward players with items and souls.

Drakekeeper Information in Dark Souls 2

The Drakekeepers are massive warriors that can be encountered at the Dragon Shrine. They are heavily armored and are equipped with one of four load-outs, wielding either sword and shield, great-sword, hammer and shield, or great-hammer. The Drakekeepers bear a striking resemblance to the Old Knights that can be encountered at Heide's Tower of Flame. In addition, they possess near identical, albeit slightly improved, attack patterns to that of the Old Knights. In combat, the Drakekeepers' attacks can be very easily counter by dodging or maneuvering around them. It is important to note that blocking has the potential to quickly drain the player's stamina thus putting them risk of becoming staggered. The Drakekeepers' slow movement speed also makes them easy targets for ranged attacks.

The eternal guardians of the Dragon Shrine. Over time, they have been gradually corrupted by Dark.

Only just recently found out that the shields used by the Greatshield+Warpick ones have pretty weak defences to the point that they pretty much leave themselves open to free swings when they try to block your attacks, I used to struggle with them almost as hard if not harder than the Greathammer dudes till I found that out.

I present to you, dear reader, my drake keeper farming guide.

first dude w/ small sword- strafe behind and punish when safe. big overhead magic chop is big punish time
big hammer man- strafe behind him and all his attacks whiff
big sword man- pull him to the stairs and all his attacks whiff or he blocks
big spiky hammer man downstairs- open the small door leading to the dragon egg behind him. run to the door behind him. he'll either bug out and stand there or you can just wait for his attacks to whiff and punish

        thank you

Took me doing an entire second play through to realize that the Warhammer + Greatshield ones have really weak guard stats to the point you can just wail on them freely even when they're blocking, fml

          • Anonymous

Always hated the greathammer ones because they have the recovery of something like a dagger instead of a GREATHAMMER, so they just swing at the speed of yes

            • Anonymous

I love how not only do the great hammer wielding Drakekeepers have infinite stamina and absurd aggression to the point that they pretty much attack constantly if you're in their range, they also are guaranteed to stunlock you if they land even a single hit on you because their attacks are guaranteed to stagger you regardless of how much poise you have and they swing so fast it's impossible to roll away before the second swing hits you, not to mention how they hit insanely hard to the point they can almost 2-shot you even if you have high vigor and good armor, yeah... Screw these guys with extreme prejudice.

              • Anonymous

Bullshit tracking and rollcatching, and infinite stamina and unending comboes Galore with the 2-handed mace variations of these bastards

                • Anonymous

The Greatshield+Warhammer ones are absolutely awful to fight, they turtle behind their shields whenever they're not attacking and are seemingly impossible to guard-break, and when they do it's the same extremely fast swings with obnoxious tracking and guaranteed stunlock that the 2-handed Great Hammer ones do, only they also have a bullshit nigh-instant shield bash that does very high damage is guaranteed to stun you and leaves you completely defenseless for a few seconds which can easily get you slaughtered if there's other enemies around, and they love to spam it everytime you get close to them, they're easily even more horrible than the Great Hammer ones imo, atleast the Great Hammer guys give you atleast one second or two to hit them

                  • Anonymous

The 2-handed mace versions of these guys must've have mentored the Greatsword-wielding Cathedral Knights from Dark Souls 3, It's uncanny how similar they are in terms of how they fight, the infinite stamina, the infinite poise, the really awful attack patterns varying from swing extremely quickly and aggressively to extremely slow and delayed swings with utterly ridiculous tracking combined with the fact they attack non-stop often swing 8 times in a row with a weapon that would require you to have 100000 stamina to get even the tiniest bit close to how much they swing, and the biggest similarity of all, THEY BOTH ****ING SUCK

                    • Anonymous

Goes to show how unhinged and broken and possibly high on crack these guys are since they'll often randomly have violent seizures and twitch and spazz out really erratically before attacking you

                      • Anonymous

I'm surprised that not more people are mentioning how horrible the greatshield+warpick ones are, they are even worse than the two-handed great mace ones if you ask me

                        • Anonymous

I'm a bit surprised by all the complaints about how hard they are... Yeah, they're annoying if you pull several at a time, but at Heide's Tower, the first ones are single... Not too tricky, just like every other DS enemy- watch and look for opportunities. Don't get greedy!
I loved going through HT on my first run-through and getting a load of souls- farming early on was great! (Way easier than in the Forest IMO).
I 'd also suggest using poison arrows if you have them, when they start attacking in small groups (ie 2 or 3) if you can poison 1, it makes the job a lot easier.

Wow this guy can combo forever, has no concept of stamina and spins on a dime to face me. This sucks.

                            *Eight years later*

Wow this boss can combo forever, has no concept of stamina, heavily tracks the player and its tells are literally unseeable on top of having 50/50 mixups. Freaking epic. From FTW

These guys are legit some of the worst enemies in the series, they break a rule that like no one else breaks, they have EXTREMELY damaging attacks and have nearly instant follow up attacks. And its a shame, because these guys look awesome and so does all their equipment.

The GreatHammer one is literally an *******, maybe a worse one than the Heide Knight with a Spear/Lance.

I hate the one with the Greathammer... Stunlock with the first attack so that the second connects. Sadly... I have to farm this weapon now for my personal 100% run. And I already made them despawn without getting it so I have to use the CoC which makes them deal even more Dmg. Thank you Dark Souls.

Hammer ones have a nasty habit of ignoring they were just attacking and moving onto a new attack string milliseconds after the last one ended...

                                      • Anonymous

Step one: Hit them with 4 poison arrows Step two: backtrack down the stairs a little (first three) / through the doorway (warpick+shield guy) Step three: wait Step four: profit

The sword weilding ones can slam their swords on you when they do the spin combo, Dodge it can't block it, how I know this? Killed by it but only once. Hardest level in the game

                                          • Anonymous

Had one of those greathammer ones do a 12 hit combo on me till I lost all my stamina from blocking. Then I got hit and it stopped.

When farming these for souls I always use greater fireball on the 2h ones they go nuts if you get in close
