Heavy Iron Key is a Key Item in Dark Souls 2 (DKS2). Heavy Iron Key, a piece of iron shaped like a key. Beyond the altar deep within the Iron Keep and through a door lies the tower where the Old Iron King once produced iron. Unlocks the door leading to Brume Tower, the initial location in the Crown of the Old Iron King DLC. Key Items are found in specific locations or are given by a related NPC which are used to unlock areas, quests, diversify the inventories of Merchants and to further progress the game's story.

Why is the comment section so salty about paying for the DLC and also having to track down the key to access it in-game?
You paid for extra DS2 content, now you're complaining that they didn't magically hand you the key like a good little boy.

You can run and jump down on the lizard from up near the later leading to cardinal fire, then just make a break for it
It's possible to get the key by killing the lizard in the tunnel near Cardinal Tower and then jump-entering the hole where it stood. It may take some attempts and it might be hard to kill the lizard too.

I used a bow to kill all the lizards from a distance without taking any damage. ITELEKT

I went to the salamander pit but there was no heavy iron key on any of the skeletons what do I do now

You can jump off the balcony into the fire pit if you land on top of one of the lizards while pressing attack in the air you take no damage

LOL very easy to access this DLC early on, just jump on the pit but positioning yourself to plunge attack the fire lizzard, doing so with automatically save from fall damage because of plunging attack anim on that fire lizzard.
