Lud and Zallen, the King's Pets are Bosses in Dark Souls 2 (DKS2)Lud and Zallen, the King's Pets, are two formidable black tigers with the same moveset as Aava. Encountered in an icy arena at the end of the Frigid Outskirts, these beasts are cherished companions of the Ivory King. Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that drop Boss Souls capable of being transformed into powerful WeaponsSpells, and Items for the player.

Lud and Zallen, the King's Pets Information in Dark Souls 2

Two of the King's dear beasts, found in a icy arena in the end of the Frigid Outskirts. Both have less health than Aava, but their damage is the same, and Zallen can go into an enraged state where he deals more damage and suffers less in return, much like the Smelter demon.

Lud and Zallen, the King's Pets Attacks in DKS2

Attack Name Attack Description
Enrage Zallen goes in berserk when his health is low. Deals more damage and gains a defense boost. Lasts for about 2 minutes.
While enraged, Zallen's health slowly regenerates.
Homing Magic Missiles Lud or Zallen will leap back and create five magic missiles above their head. These missiles will home in with magic damage.
Damage greatly reduced with Havel's Greatshield and additional magic resistance (such as ring or consumable) even when hit with all five.

Dark Souls 2 Lud and Zallen, the King's Pets Strategy

One on one melee strategy

When they are about to do a non-magical attack, walk towards them and roll forward when they launch the attack. If you time it right, they will miss you. After the attack you're either behind or below them and you get an opportunity to strike (or heal).

Once they cast the homing missiles run towards them as fast as possible. If you make it to the back of them, all of them will miss and you get an opportunity to hit him a couple of times. When they are with two, it is best to use the Brightbug. Equip it right before Zallen comes in the arena (that is when Lud is at about 1/3 of his health). Since it takes a while to equip, it is best to use it when Lud does a magical attack. Make sure you are out of reach of the attack and equip it, then you have plenty of time. Once equipped focus on Lud and try to kill him before the effect wears out. Also before Zallen comes to the arena, it is best to have max health.

When battling both of them at the same time try to use one as a meat shield for another. When caught between them dash near one of them and bait a melee attack to dodge roll behind the cat leaving another in a place where it can't jump on you. Baiting a melee attack is also useful when one of them charges the magical missile attack and the other is near you. Just roll under the melee attack and run fast immediately after it to dodge missiles. This strategy makes you are pretty much far away from both of them when missiles miss you and you have time to turn around and see where they are before they jump attack.

Personally I though the magic shield was best to use in this fight, because it has a very high magic resistance. It doesn't stop 100 % of the physical attacks, but I dodged most of those anyway. Also I found dodging their attacks really easy when I was at 50 % of the weight limit.

Lud and Zallen, the King's Pets Hints in Dark Souls 2

  • Like most bosses that buff (e.g. Smelter Demon), consider using a Brightbug to maintain your hard earned advantage.
  • Finish off Lud as quickly as you can after Zallen joins the fight.
  • During Zallens berserk mode he will regenerate hp faster than you can conventially do damage. Wait and dodge only for around 30 seconds, and it will wear off and you'll be able to fight him quite easily, if of course, you killed Lud first.
  • Homing magic missile attack can be completely avoid by simply strafing to the right at medium or long range or behind close range.
  • If you get low on health the best way to bait a chance to heal is to get close and when a cat swings his arm roll straight through him to his backside and immediately use a lifegem while walking away.
  • If you kill Zallen first the remaining cat Lud will instead go enraged state when low on health and also learns how to bite jump

I had to swallow my pride and used summons for my SL1 broken sword run for this boss because I have no money for the psychologist

Another DS2 boss where hitboxes are egregiously inconsistent. The worst part of this game is how many things seem like they *could* have been great and instead we ended up with the worst version of it. The difficulty of other FromSoft games were skill-based whereas this so often feels dependent on luck, especially noticeable when doing SL1 runs. Everything is just so cheap and inconsistent that you never get the hard earned sense of carthasis that usually makes these games so special.

Theses bosses are almost impossible in a challenge run (no summons, no weapon upgrades, no Human Effigy, no range attacks, no power stancing etc)

Finally defeated them after dozens or so hours. It was pain and suffering fighting them as melee and solo. To contribute to the community, my advices are:
-As soon as the second tigers appears, try to kill the first one as fast as possible.
-Damage matter here. If you are able, try using a fire weapon.
-Shields can be useful, but know that the bite attack can not be blocked.
-The pawn attack is not purely physical, it also deals elemental damage.
-Never stay between them. If find yourself in such place, run quickly close to a tiger, staying beside or behind.
-Use one of the boss as physical protection against the other. But beware: Homing Magic Missiles (the crystal attack) will go through the other tiger.
-When Zallen goes berserk (his aura becomes red), attack him immediately. Don't let him heal too much.
            Hope it helps someone.

Worst boss in any souls game. I beat every boss but i skipped these two simply because of 1. the runback and 2. its a repeat boss, I beat aava and i don't feel like fighting aava 1 and aava 2 that's not a boss that's just lack of content and re using a boss without knowing why that boss was good.

Dark souls 2 had potential but it'll never be good even if there is a remastered version, fromsoft usually don't change much with their remasters. It's a shame because darksouls 2 does some things i really like. It's similar to a sonic 06 case, sonic 06 has a lot of potential ( like project 06 where its a fully fixed version with actual momentum) But if you need to mod a game in order for it to be fixed and reach full potential instead of the devs patching the issues themselves then it is a bad game.

"Once they cast the homing missiles run towards them as fast as possible." Only if you are close, if not I suggest to run to any side (no need to roll).

All DLC optional bosses and areas are made with the only purpose of "haha dark souls hard" literally all the zones lacks in logic design but this boss is the last drop.

Is literally a boss made for doing it with a player overleveled or with summons.

The reindeer in the blizzard gimmick is fun and interesting the first time, less so the tenth time. The final chapel ruin is literally crying for a bonfire, there's even a hollow in there praying for one to appear. Don't give up, poor soul...

Btw I discovered Santier's Spear (and possibly other two-handers with the Twinblade moveset) stagger the zappy horses completely, you can 100 to 0 them quite easily without them even being able to hit you. Hope this makes the run-up to the copy+paste cats slightly more tolerable for melee gamers

I played DS2 8 years ago and skipped this boss because the level seemed like BS. But I just came back to try again and beat them on my first try, with help from the jolly summons. Fire Red Iron Twinblade, Flame Clutch ring, STR/FTH build, no problem. Don't need to think about the one Souls boss I skipped all those years ago anymore.

Fire rapier + Bright bug + 40/40 str/dex + some luck = 500 per hit. I managed to kill them in a minute and a half.

There is absolutely no shame in summoning for this boss. I beat every single boss in the Company of Champions covenant and only turned off for this boss without any hesitation, and I have zero regrets doing so. If you try to do this boss solo, you should probably be checked into a mental institute, there is no enjoyment to be had trying to solo this, and there are other ways to hurt yourself if you actually hate yourself that much.

I normally don't like summoning for bosses at all, not out of any belief like "Summoning for bosses makes you as scrublord loser" or anything like that, It's just since I purely personally speaking I don't find it as satisfying to beat a boss mostly through an NPC just face-tanking all their attacks and I find they do nothing more than throw my rhythm off and make it harder to tell when the boss is attacking you, but for this fight? Screw It, that all goes out of the window, just summon Vengarl, Feeva and O'Harrah you'll save yourself a ton of agony on this boss and this entire god-awful area in general

I carried those 3 NPCs vs the horses and they carried me in the boss fight. Jolly cooperation is the way to go guys, first try horses are harder.

Since they are weak to fire, bring close range pyromancies like (great) combustion, fire whip, fire storm, fire snake, ...
                                And a flame weapon OFC
                                They will melt quite easily

There's a fair few people who say this is the "hardest" fight in the game, but I wouldn't call it the hardest, if you wanna see a truly hard boss, look at let's say Fume Knight, Sir Alonne those bosses are definitely hard, not unfair at all but definitely hard, sure it's understandable to say this boss is harder because you had a harder time with it, but the biggest difference between this fight and Fume Knight's fight, is that Fume Knight is a very challenging boss who keeps you on your toes, he's not bullshit, this boss though? It's not hard at all in a fair or conventional way since it's just a horribly-designed/balanced gank fight where they slapped the same boss that you fought not long ago earlier and made it "harder" by just putting two of them down and colouring them purple/black, it's not a tough challenge that tests your skill at all, it's a huge steaming pile of lazily-designed bullshit, it's less the "hardest boss in the game" and more just the "most bullshit boss fight in the game", because unlike other infamously hard bosses in the series, it isn't a great challenge that tests your skill, it's just a bullshit lazily-designed gank squad where they plonked two clones of the same boss you already fought a few hours/minutes ago, and coloured them purple/black and gave them a stupid buff ability for the surviving one when you kill the other one of them, sure they technically could be the hardest boss if you go by how much trouble you had with them, but there's a big difference between a hard challenging well-designed boss, and an awfully balanced lazy gank boss that wasn't balanced even remotely fairly/enjoyably

I'd rather fight O&S only it's Sir Alonne and Fume Knight fighting you together, than do Horse**** Valley and this stupid damn boss again

I used Two-handed spears (Pike and stone spear as backup for durability reasons) with leo ring and coal pine resin. Don't do a roll attack after dodging and do a normal thrust attack instead so you take advantage of the ring. You can make quick of the first lion with it before it turns into a gank fest. Also fight the first lion at the opposite side of where the 2nd lion is laying so you can have a bit of time killing the first one while the other is running at you from the other side of the area.

Pretty ridiculous map, but can be done with enough planning. Shield with good electric resistance, "Strong Magic Shield" spell and pyromancy helped a lot. Iron King's crown is also good for restoring spell uses.
I ignored all buildings, hugged the right wall of the map and fought horses one by one healing myself and NPCs with warmth when needed. Only once we have to fight 2 at once.
Cats can be annoying but even with 2 summons they have less hp than Alva. Once again - pyromancy helps a lot

Tip 1: Just kill everything 10+ times.
Tip 2: Prepare to die, over and over in the boss fight.
Tip 3: Return at Lvl 300 so you can vent on these two ****ers.

This shitfest of a boss fight planted the seeds for Elden Ring's dogshit gank fights like Valiant Gargoyles and Godskin Duo, you can't convince me otherwise, as a stupid masochist who completed frigid outskirts and this stupid fight, my advice to anyone isj just, if you wanna attempt it just... Don't, it's not worth your pride, literally anything else is more worth your time

I don't get the big deal with this boss and the area before it there isn't many enemies at all, getting to the blue smelter demon or even getting to the fume knight is alot worse

                                                • This fight (and the journey to it) wasn't too bad with the 3 npc summons. Managed it first try thankfully because I definitely don't ever want to fight them again

                                                  • Anonymous

If you hate using npc summons but hate Frigid Wastes more, you can piecemeal it a bit by summoning three phantoms, running past everything to the fog wall, and then using the black crystal to banish them all before you start the fight. The enemies should be preoccupied enough with your summons that you get there largely unscathed. Keep the sunlight to your right!

                                                    • Anonymous

Agree this area is BS, but weirdly I sort of enjoyed it (with ALL 3 summons — I would HATE doing this solo and advise against it!).

                                                      Some tips.

Getting there and navigation: this is somewhat similar to real navigation. Wait until it clears out. Pick a target (a building!) and run to it. Repeat until you reach the bridge.

Build: this was pretty easy for a faith build. You get lots of extra heals for the journey and your gank squad, leaving estus for the boss fight. Fire-infused is good here. Take lots of weapons or repair powder with you.

Boss fight: if you get to Lud and Zallen it’s fairly easy from there with the summons (again, not without). Target Lud (the first one to appear) and stick to it till it dies. Your summons are beefy so just try not to get killed and you’ll be fine.

If you don’t mind using NPC summons there’s no real reason to avoid this area. Again, would hate doing this solo though.

                                                      • Anonymous

Considering all the cut ideas that DS2 had: Open World, Time Travel, etc; it really hurts seeing just how bad this game turned out.

Thank god Elden Ring managed to salvage the ideas and potential that DS2 originally had...

This area is so bad. It’s not fun, it’s not challenging, it’s just downright annoying. It’s 5-6 minutes of hopefully running in a straight line, over the same snowed out land, with random blizzards just completely blinding you and so stupid frozen horses attacking you. I’m not mad at the difficulty, it’s really not hard at all when you’re level 198, have the Vendrick Greatsword and over 1k defense with a giant shield, it’s annoying because it’s like they gave up and said “well we have this giant area with nothing, let’s put 3 reindeer, some zombies, and a DND party and trick people into running off a bridge cause the blizzard blinds you” also no bonfire….

                                                          • Anonymous

I've never skipped any part of any souls game. But this is just pure garbage, I'm never playing this again in my life. Suddenly 3 horses were attacking me and also a guy with a hammer appeared behind me and killed me, this is not hard... it's just ridiculous. There is absolutely NOTHING positive or enjoyable about this area, not wasting my time here.

The essence of cancer. The only reason to fight them is if you want to experience the worst thing From Software has ever done. After dying multiple times in the run up I managed to kill them both first encounter. Which is good because dying to these trash heap bosses would be unbearable. To make things worse they broke both an ultra great sword and a fume knight great sword in the fight so I barely finished them with my third weapon. Then I took their trash loot, cursed, and will never go back. The only way to win this fight is to never attempt it.

                                                                  • Anonymous

How TF does stuff like this even get through testing? did they even test it?

I really want to like ds2, it has so many great things, Sunken Crown DLC was awesome, and everything in this DLC up to this point was really awsome. It should have just ended with Ivory King.

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

I focused on one tiger at the time, when he casted magic missiles i just run to his rear leg and did some damage. Fight turned out to be easy and i beat them on my first try, using 3 flasks during fight ,and 4 flasks on my way here..all of my summons survived too

                                                                          • Anonymous

It's 2022 and I still have never beat this boss and never plan to. Screw the run and screw gank fights where you need to kite for 50 hours to get 1 attack in.

                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                              Its the only rational option.

                                                                                >horse making everything more frustating
                                                                                >die

                                                                                • Anonymous

You can run through the whole area without fight a single horse, if you just run in a straight line to each one of the buildings in the zone, if you want to be 100% sure just be sure to run when the blizzard finishes and you can see the next building, run without stop, without roll or jump and you'll get safe. That way the path to this boss is really long and boring but not an absolute hell

                                                                                  • Anonymous

This sh*t boss was so badly made and i wish i could mod this game so i can rid Zallen out of existence and fight only Lud, or maybe if the boss run wasn't so sh*t and if they could use their brains and put a f*cking bonfire close to the boss! But nooooo make life of ds players worse and miserable as possible, f*ck you developers!

                                                                                      • Anonymous

Horses shouldn't re spawn, weather effects are horrendous (cant imagine if you were visually impaired!). Will forever leave dark souls 2 with a bad taste in my mouth.

Do they do infinite damage or is there some extra damage type in there like dark or magic added on to the physical strikes?
