Moonlight Greatsword is a Greatsword and one of the available Weapons in Dark Souls 2Moonlight Greatsword is a radiant weapon with a blade that gleams like moonlight. Upgraded with Petrified Dragon Bones, this greatsword possesses a special strong attack, unleashing a powerful wave of moonlight. It has a unique heavy attack for both one-handed and two-handed use, featuring magical beams and ground smashes

The blade of this greatsword shines like the brilliant rays of the moon.

In the oldest legends, rarely spoken of today, it is said that the sword was born of a great white being.

The strong attack unleashes its strength, launching a wave of moonlight.

Effect: special attack (strong attack)

How to get Moonlight Greatsword in Dark Souls 2

DS2 Moonlight Greatsword Hints and Tips

  • Upgraded with Petrified Dragon Bones.
  • Cannot be buffed anymore as of 1.03 patch.
  • Possesses a unique heavy attack both one handed and two handed: 1h is a horizontal magic beam with a vertical follow-up ground smash. 2h's are a vertical magic beam with a horizontal follow-up. A power-stance heavy attack will not fire this beam unlike some other special attacks.
  • This attack costs 10 durability to use, however the Bracing Knuckle Ring and its variants reduce this cost to 8, 7 and 5 respectively. With the required 18 int to wield this weapon, the Repair spell can be used to increase the number of uses of this attack without needing to buy Repair Powders or sitting at a bonfire.
  • From 18 to 38 int, the Raw infusion wins over both the Regular and Magic infusions. Above 39, the Magic Infusion becomes the strongest. (448 AR Magic vs 488 AR Raw at 18 int, 512 AR Magic vs 511 AR Raw at 39 int)
  • The Enchanted infusion converts the weapon’s magic damage to physical, resulting in the heavy attack dealing no damage, as its damage scales entirely off your magic AR. Strangely enough, this also raises your physical block from 60% to 93,3%. (425 physical AR at 18 int, 445 AR at 39 int)

DS2 Moonlight Greatsword Trivia

  • The Moonlight Greatsword is a recurring item in FROM Software's games appearing in Ninja Blade, King's Field, Armored Core, Enchanted Arms, Otogi, Demon's Souls, Dark Souls and Bloodborne.
  • This particular instance physically resembles the Demons Souls version of the sword, although there are references to Seath from the original Dark Souls as the originator of this particular sword.
  • It is called by most players with an acronym: MLGS (MoonLight GreatSword).

infinitely better than the bluemoon and most other greatswords even with moderate int investment plus magic and infinitely better than the versions after it besides bloodborne, just feels weird with the blade being so long and then never again

      • Fun fact: If you use Flynn's Ring with low Equip Load (up to 14 Vit and no Royal Soldier's Ring/Dragon Rings), it gains 50 physical damage plus it's magic damage. Didn't try using the Ring of Blades tho

        • Anonymous

Kinda curious that it uses the Ultra-greatsword vertical swings for it's two-handed r1s, I think it may be the only Greatsword that uses a move typically only found in an Ultra-greatsword moveset

          • Anonymous

build idea. character named 18. wields the moonlight greatsword which has 18s for it's stat requirements. Can only equip items with 18s as one of it's stat requirements and has 18 in every stat.

            • Anonymous

Probably my second favorite version of this weapon, the first being Bloodborne’s. Part of what makes this one so fantastic is the ability to make it deal entirely physical or entirely magic damage. So, if you’re a sorcerer who just wants a pure physical weapon, give this the Enchanted path and it still scales up to A.

              • Anonymous

Probably the best version of the MLGS that we’ve gotten. The pure magic damage is great, not having to worry about split damage. However, if you are running a combined Int/Fth build, you can still enchant it.

                • Anonymous

If you've got a low-VIT build, Flynn's Ring can add in a cheeky bit of physical damage without doing an enchanted infusion.

Dont wanna be rude but mlgs is trash in this game. Try dual wield blue flames and you can even finish ng+7 with these.

                    • Anonymous

A magic-oriented sword... patched to not receive buffs like GMW/CMW and requiring both 18 dex/srt? Not worth it man, and not cool FROM.

                      • Anonymous

I just realized fromsoft / agetec / from is 40+ years old and people still don't get the weapon is in every game they make with no special lore besides that.

                        And people still argue that.
40 ****ing years of which blue mech sword or dead king's soul in a sword or magic moon rock sword or magic moon beam sword or unholy cursed sword or moon dragon tail sword or....

                        God damn.

                        • What were they thinking? That's the best (not ultra) greatsword by a mile. Cannot apply magic/dark/etc weapon on it but still it outclasses any other greatsword even when they get their magic/dark/whatever buff. Is only 8 weight making it viable for dual wield easily.
Just +5 and enchant it for magic.

                          • Anonymous

So i guess, use raw stone or magic huh? As long as it gets top damage in S scaling you're going to be a force to be reckoned with.

                            • Anonymous

Out of all the series, this one has my favorite projectile attacks. That two handed ground slam r2 is just so sick!

                              • Anonymous

magic +5 seems best for a sorcery build also this is better than the bluemoon greatsword for sorecery builds right?

                                • Anonymous

I like the small side story with the fake version. It actually makes sense that a craftsman would try to produce a replica of such a legendary blade like this. Funnily enough, the replica actually matches the original more than the real one.

                                  • Anonymous

Seems a little silly that it requires 18 in strength, dexterity, and intelligence to wield. I would've imagined it would require more int and less dex.

                                    • Anonymous

how can something like a weapon made from seaths tail be in hands of such lout and his ancestors LMAO oh god i guess chosen undead is hes grand grand grand father.if only he could just be so grossly incandescent

                                      • Anonymous

For an int/faith 40/40 build, how would dark & lightning infusions AR fair against magic infused with something like 70 int? Because it still gets its S for its main (obviously much much less raw) but it also gets a B for dark/lightning. I have a feeling it will have less overall AR, but would having a different damage type still make it at least viable? [PvP & PvE]

"Power stance heavy attack does not shoot projectiles. you may wield BlueMoon Greatsword on left hand instead for a variable offhand weapon moveset." This needs a correction. While power stance-ing with the MoonLight GreatSword in the left hand, the weapon will not perform the projectile attack. releasing power stance restores this attack. Holding the MoonLight GreatSword in the right hand while power stance-ing does not overwrite the projectile attack, regardless of which weapon is in the left hand. Power Stance move sets are determined by the right hand weapon, and the weapon wielded in the left hand does not change the move set. So long as that weapon is power stance compatible, regardless of whether the offhand is the BlueMoon GreatSword (the fake obtained from Benhart of Jugo) or any other GreatSword, the move set will not change. The claim that a variable offhand move set when wielding both blue swords is possible is completely false. I've just tested it in my game, and I have enough stats to power stance both weapons - but the move set with the MoonLight GreatSword and the BlueMoon GreatSword is exactly identical to the move set of the MoonLight GreatSword and the GreatSword. Players hoping to combine these weapons should be aware that they will receive no benefits.

This does not resemble demons soul's large sword of moonlight. First of all it was transparent, it had an actual sword within the moonlight sword, the hilt looks nothing alike. Imo demon's souls had the coolest version, it even went through shields in that game. Idk why From got rid of the transparent sword part, really felt like it was made of moonlight.

Still remember when this beast could be buffed with crystal magic weapon in vanilla game. Damn, if hit hard.

against bosses and respawning tough enemies that do primarily physical damage, would this be good with havel's armour?

i dont know who was smoking crack but this sword looks nothing like the des version the des version as a matter of fact this version is the most different ALL of the other swords (dks/dks3/bloodborne/kingsfield) look almost identical to the des one but this one looks like a giant popsicle

How does the int scaling work when infused to enchanted? Does the int in that case scale with physical damage, as opposed to elemental?

                                                    • Anonymous

The swing speed for a One-Handed R1 is a regular Greatsword, while the Two-Handed swings are Ultra Greatsword speed.
