Staff of Olenford the sorcerer.

A catalyst for sorceries and hexes.

Olenford, revered as the father of sorcery in Melfia, sought knowledge that surpassed mankind's ken, and so ventured into the Undead Crypt, and did away with his humanity.

Scholar of the First Sin added:

Some hold the theory that Melfian sorceries and pyromancies originated within the boundaries of Drangleic, in ages past.

Acquired From

  • Undead Crypt. Reveal a secret room from a hidden wall in the pit that leads to the shortcut lever, then use a [[@darksouls2/Pharros' Lockstone|Pharros' Lockstone].* It is wise to grab this while a phantom is present, for its location is in a dangerous room. In this room, a hollow will repeatedly ring a bell, summoning approx. 5 Leydia Pyromancers. They will continue to be summoned by the bell even if you kill them, and they deal high damage. If you're making a quick run, equip the Ring of Life Protection and identify the illusory wall (the wall will be flat unlike the rest of the wall) and use a Lockstone. Then, quickly use a Homeward Bone, and go hit the new illusory wall, and claim the staff. (Or you can smash the stone slabs the sorcerers are summoned from so that they can never be summoned there again even after resting at a bonfire)* Alternately, destroying the tombstones producing the Leydia Pyromancers will allow you to obtain the staff safely, and they will remain destroyed for the remainder of your playthrough until the next NG cycle. Be careful of the one down one of the side passages, as the other pyromancers will happily trap you if you haven't killed them yet. Once done, the staff is safely obtained.Hints and Tips:* Basically a Twinkling Titanite version of Witchtree Branch, although this one is actually much inferior, not only it's heavier and slower, the fully upgraded stat is much worse than Witchtree Branch.
  • Despite being inferior, the stat requirement is, outrageously, 40 Int, twice as high as Witchtree Branch.
  • It is simply UNWISE to invest on this staff unless you want a decorative staff.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".

Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has.
Regular(R), Thrust(T), Slash(Sl), Strike(St)

It looks as though while Olenford's Staff starts out at a damage advantage over the Witchtree Branch, it doesn't upgrade well and gains almost no scaling increase (B magic and A dark all the way up until fully upgraded at +5). Conclusion: Witchtree branch IS the superior staff in every way, whether dark or magic infused as the witchtree branch has 287 magic AR with B magic scaling while magic infused at +10 and Olenford's Staff has only 241 magic AR with B magic scaling magic infused and fully upgraded; Witchtree branch and Olenford's Staff both have 287 dark AR dark infused with A dark scaling fully upgraded though the witchtree branch has a higher casting speed (140 compared to Olenford's 120). When dark infused they have the same AR, but witchtree has higher casting speed, when magic infused witchtree has higher magic AR AND higher casting speed.

The wiki makes this staff out to be terrible, but it's really not? It starts with B magic and A dark scaling, it has 120 casting speed (which is only 15 less than the sorcerer's staff and 20 less than the witchtree branch though the witchtree branche's main attraction is it's casting speed, 140 is considered high casting speed so comparing a normal staff's casting speed with the witchtree branch's special attribute is kinda...), it only ways 1 more pound than the witchtree branch (since apparently we're comparing this staff with that one? not sure why...) and it starts out with 140 AR on both stats (for reference, the sorcerer's staff starts out with 112 of each and double C scaling and the witchtree branch starts with 125 of each and C int/ B dark scaling). If we're comparing the two staves, those being witchtree branch and olenford's staff, then it's all about preference as it's essentially just: do you want to hit lighter, but faster (witchtree) or do you want to hit harder, but slower(olenford)? I honestly think that olenford's staff MIGHT be better because the damage increase seems to be quite significant if you take into account the already higher base AR and the better scaling to boot, the only trade off is the 20 casting speed. Of course, i'm talking about using the staff for sorceries, though it appears to be more suited to hexes, did you know it actually easily compares to the sunset staff? Actually, i'd go so far as to say it's clearly better for hexes than the sunset staff because it has higher casting speed, stats are as follows: dark sunset staff +5 has 319 dark AR, S dark scaling and only 105 casting speed while as the dark olenford's staff +5 has 287 AR, A dark scaling and 120 casting speed. That's 32 less base AR than the dark sunset staff and it has A dark scaling which is great, so it'll hit like a truck AND cast at a decent speed as apposed to just hitting like a truck. It's a similar situation to comparing Olenford's staff with the witchtree branch, only instead of hard and slow vs light and fast i'd say its: hard and slow or slightly-less-hard and faster.
