Red Rust Sword is a Straight Sword and one of the available Weapons in Dark Souls 2. Red Rust Sword is a unique Straight Sword, upgraded with Twinkling Titanite to +5. Despite its classification as a straight sword, its moveset aligns more closely with one-handed axes, featuring slightly slower slicing motions than traditional straight swords.

Straight sword of warrior Vengarl of Forossa.
This sword is battle-worn and terribly rusted, but remains a deadly weapon owing to its incredible weight.

Legend has it that it was built to test the limits of the strength of Forossa knights, until Vengarl swung it about like a wooden plaything, claiming ownership by demonstration.

DS2 Red Rust Swords Hints and Tips

  • Although classified as a straight sword, it shares a moveset with most one-handed axes in the game, employing slightly slower slicing motions compared to straight swords.
  • Damage types list it as Slash/Thrust, though the only thrusting attack this weapon has is its parry.
  • It has slightly higher poise damage than other non-axe one-handed weapons. (5 points higher)
  • Can be used to Power Stance with a large selection of weapons, similarly to the Warped Sword.
  • Works with Red Rust Sword in either hand, and uses the Axe L2/LT power stance attack if used with a Dagger/Axe/Thrusting Sword in the other hand.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit

Even with S scaling Regular +5 doesn't seem worth IMO, the damage is still too low becuase of its low base stats, I am missing something?

In case if it wasn't clear, the reason why you'd take Red Rust Sword over Axes is because of its Power Stance options. Wielding it with Straight Swords / Curved Swords will grant you their power stance movesets, which are infinitely better than the Axe's one.
Also, the first 1-Handed R1 attack has noticeably less ending lag when compared to Axes, giving it a faster swing rate and/or extra combo potential. Unfortunately, the Running R1 & first R2 attacks now have increased lag.
The lack of Counter Damage is also a bit disappointing, but the extra range & speed while dual wielding with the swords does make it a poise-breaking monster.

this definitely needs a Counter Damage buff.
since is basically an Axe moveset it should have the 120 standar of Axes, or atleast 110.
