Varangian Sword is a Straight Sword and one of the available Weapons in Dark Souls 2. Varangian Sword is a Straight Sword that can be upgraded using regular Titanite up to +10. It provides a range of slashing attacks, making it a sturdy choice in the weapon lineup. With slightly more range and almost double the durability of the Drakekeeper's Sword, the Varangian Sword does sacrifice some counter damage and is a bit heavier.

Straight sword wielded by Varangians and engraved with a skull. A former king launched a campaign to capture these terrors of the high seas, but rather than imprison them, forced them into hard labor at No-man's Wharf. The king, wracked with fear and suspicion, began to see the progenitor of the curse in anything and everything. During his reign, sorcerers in particular suffered dreadful persecution.

How to get Varangian Sword in Dark Souls 2

  • Dropped by Varangian Sailors that wield this sword in No-Man's Wharf

DS2 Varangian Sword Hints and Tips

  • Reinforced using regular Titanite to +10.
  • Has a full suite of slashing attacks.
  • Essentially a stronger version of the Broadsword and an alternative to the Drakekeeper's sword, which has slightly more range and almost two times it's durability but has no counter damage, it is heavier, slightly less damaging and requiring more stamina for each slash when compared to the Varangian sword.

The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".

i picked this up early on my most recent playthrough. i hadnt seen it ever before so i checked it out and decided to level it up and infuse it and i love it. started of with dark infusion with dark weapon spellbuff, now lightning infused with sunlight blade and it shreds everything in my way. i also think it has a very cool design with the skull on the hilt, very edgy, i like it :3
only wished the durability was better, as well as the short range, but i mostly dont mind it at all, just have to keep a repair powder in case, but recently i mostly use it as my back up weapon anyway.

The durability is a non-issue unless you plan on fighting absolutely every enemy in your way. You should always have backup weapons for any given situation, but this is probably the best all around sword to keep on hand. Don't forget Champions covenant to stop enemies from despawning if it's not dropping for you before perma-killing them.

Every time I play DS2 this is my go-to PvP weapon for early game (often all the way to late game). I rarely use it as a main weapon since low durability is an issue, but whenever someone invades me I take out this weapon knowing I can pretty reliably win a duel with it. The R2 has range, speed and a nice area of effect. Also I just love how this sword looks: ornate yet realistic. Farming Varangians for it can be a pain, yes, but for me it's always worth it. This and the sea bow for it's wild range.

          • can strongly recommend this sword if you need a good blade to help carry you to the end of the game or even just to get to a weapon you want, with a bit of durability management this will serve you well

Love this sword. I don't know if it was a lucky drop, but being a battlemage, this infused with Dark had carried me through a lot of the game. Does have low durability but I always carried a backup (who doesn't?), and often had the repair spell, but didn't 'always' need to use either of them.

A great all-round sword, breaks quickly though. I'd recommend a different main weapon with higher durability and keeping this as a back-up for those slightly longer runs
