Sorceries, Pyromancies, Miracles, and Hexes

Magic in Dark Souls II consist of four different classes:
Number of Casts remaining and queue for next spell
Number of Casts remaining and queue for next spell

  • Sorceries- Soul magic (scales with INT)
  • Pyromancies- Fire magic (scales with INT and FTH equally)
  • Miracles - Holy / lightning magic (scales with FTH)
  • Hexes - Dark, soul-utilizing magic (scales with either INT or FTH, whichever stat is lowest)

To use any kind of Magic, the player must:
  1. Obtain a spell scroll, either by finding it or buying it from a merchant
  2. Attune the spell at a Bonfire
  3. Equip a Staff, Chime or Pyromancy Flame to cast it. Staves for Sorceries, Chimes for Miracles, Flames for Pyromancies, and Chimes or Staves for Hexes.

Cast Amount: Spells have limited amounts of casts before they are depleted, but resting at a Bonfire will fully replenish them. Consumable Items such as Amber herb, Twilight Herb, Rouge Water and Crimson Water can also restore spell uses.

Multiple spell scrolls of the same type can be attuned at once. For example, attuning a Lightning Spear scroll grants 3 casts, but if the player has two Lightning Spear scrolls, they can attune the spell twice, granting 6 casts (provided they have at least two Attunement slots).

Spices & Spell Requirements

Throughout the game you may encounter Skeptic's Spice and Simpleton's Spice . These items can be used to reduce the required skill in Faith or Intelligence respectively . The Spice affects only one spell, but you can use multiple spices to lower requirements to a minimum of 10 intelligence or faith. Please see the linked pages for detailed information on spices.

Sorcery is a school of magic that inflicts magic elemental damage with its offensive spells. Most of the spells are offensive focused, while others can be used to manipulate sound and light. Staves are the main catalysts for casting sorceries. Magic damage can be improved by increasing the Intelligence stat. The soft cap for magic damage is 40 Int.

Pyromancy is a school of magic that deals fire elemental damage with its offensive spells. Most of the pyromancy spells are offensive focused and are short to medium ranged. The Pyromancy Flame and Dark Pyromancy Flame are the only catalysts in the game able to cast pyromancies. Fire damage scales with Intelligence and Faith stats, but there aren't any stat requirements for casting pyromancies. The soft cap for fire damage is Int+Fth = 60.

As one might guess, the rock-solid flesh enabled by this spell dramatically slows movement. Guaranteed to cause trouble if used at an inopportune moment.
(Increases defense by 100, all resistances by 10%, poise by 100 but reduces movement speed. Lasts 20 seconds.)

Warmth 4-8 1 One of the lost pyromancies preserved only in the Undead Crypt. Creates a gentle, warm flame that heals those who touch it.
Fire can be a show of strength, but it is also a symbol of wisdom and comfort. Fire is what the caster wishes it be.

The catalysts for casting miracles are called chimes. Lightning damage increases with the Faith stat. The soft cap for lightning damage is 40 Faith.

In the original Dark Souls, hexes were only a subset of sorcery colloquially called dark magic. They have been continuously experimented on and have become their own independent form of magic, as hexes in Dark Souls 2.

Hexes deal dark elemental damage and offer a good balance of offensive spells and self-buffs. They are divided into two categories: staff hexes and chime hexes, and are unique in that respect. Dark damage scales with the the lower of the Intelligence or Faith stat. The soft cap for dark damage is at 30/30 Int/Fth.
