The Twin Dragonriders are a Boss in Dark Souls 2 (DKS2). The Twin Dragonriders consist of two formidable foes. One of them, stationed on a platform, employs a Great Bow, while the other adopts the moveset akin to the Dragonrider from Heide's Tower. These dragonriders coordinate their attacks, providing a challenging encounter. Bosses are unique and challenging Enemies that drop Boss Souls capable of being transformed into powerful WeaponsSpells, and Items for the player.

The Twin Dragonriders Overview in Dark Souls 2

As the name implies, there are two Dragonriders. One of the dragonriders uses a Great Bow from a platform; the other uses the same moveset as the Dragonrider from Heide's Tower. They will attack you together. The archer can come down after a certain threshold of damage has been done or if the player ever locks on to them; when the archer drops, it will switch to using a halberd as well.

The Twin Dragonriders Hints in Dark Souls 2

  • The archer can be lured down by taking a certain amount of damage, standing in its blind spot, fighting the second Dragonrider beneath its platform, or destroying the pillars supporting its platform.
  • It is recommended to use dark mist as soon as you hit the fog gate, on the archer, then just avoid the melee one until the archer stops taking damage. This will get him about 3/4 the way dead.
  • The archer has less HP than the melee Dragonrider (around 1470 vs 3670).
  • Both Dragonriders can be poisoned; it takes about 4 - 5 hits from a Poison Throwing Knife or Poison Arrow for the poison to take effect, and you will need at least 10 Poison Throwing Knives to finish off each of them. The archer should die within one cycle of poisoning, and the melee Dragonrider within 2 cycles plus a few melee hits.
  • Pilgrim Bellclaire can be summoned near the fog gate for this fight.
  • Bashful Ray can be summoned and led to this fight from his summon sign in the room full of Golems, Stone Soldiers, and Ruin Sentinels.

Magic/Ranged

When the fight begins, focus your attacks on the archer; for magic users, Great Lightning Spear, Soul Spear, Dark Fog, and Chaos Storm are effective. After the archer is dead, the fight can be continued according to the same strategy as the lone Dragonrider in Heide's Tower of Flame.

Or use dark mist as soon as entering, as this will get the archer 3/4 the way dead, then just avoid punishment for killing his best friend.

Melee

Focus your attacks on the ground level Dragonrider according to the same strategy as the lone Dragonrider in Heide's Tower of Flame until the archer jumps down. After the archer jumps down, focus on that one, then return to the second one. Long, fast weapons are recommended, such as the Ultra Greatsword, the Black Knight Greatsword, or a buffed katana. Melee weapons infused with Fire or Lightning are also a good choice, as the Twin Dragonriders are weak to both those damage types.

Pyromancy

Once again, lure the archer into jumping down, then hit them both with Fire Whip. With some luck, this will stagger one or both of them, and you'll be able to pull of consecutive casts. When you run out of casts use one or two Chaos Storm spells to finish them off. If you see them wind up to attack, try to dodge it and move behind their backs. It is recommeded to have Pyromancy Flame +9. No rings necessary, but equipping the Northern Ritual Band and the Clear Bluestone Ring might help.

You can finish this boring ahh bossfight faster by running straight to the bosses after you enter the fog gate, then let the melee dragonrider hit the platform that the archer dragonrider is standing on, dropping him and allowing you to kill him, and from there you bully the melee dragonrider quickly

      • I was low estus and scared because of the fog gate so I panicked and used every consumable buff before the fight. Entered the fight, saw a doggo rider and accidentally nuked him. then the second doggo Rider showed up and I also accidentally nuked them.
I feel really bad for them, no one asked me to send nukes but I did

Why is the info for this boss duo so poorly organized? There's a "Twin Dragonriders" page that's completely empty, then there's this page about the dame duo but with "Second Encounter" in the title despite describing the first encounter with this specific duo. The Drangleic Castle wiki page links to this page but searching for "Twin Dragonriders" leads players to the empty page with no info.
Just delete the other "Twin Dragonriders" page, and get rid of the "Second Encounter" in the title of this page that clearly refers to the duo, not the singular boss, that way when people search out the first boss of Drangleic Castle they don't have to deal with all the confusion, thinking there's no info on the boss.

Not the worst duo fight, certainly nowhere near as bad as Lud and Zallen, but i think the black Dragonrider should've been a little more different than the red one rather than just being the same but black and with less health once he jumps down to fight you, maybe he could've used the Dragonrider twinblade instead of the halberd and shield, and been more aggressive/agile

            • Anonymous

I actually think this is a really good duo boss take, as you can approach it by knocking down the archer as he is easier to kill, but can punish you hard if you don't move alot. The melee one has more health but can be strafed into knocking down the archer. If they had more health this would be better than OandS imo

THE TWIN DRAGON RIDER PAGE FROM THE CASTLE IS EMPTY. SEARCH UP " SECOND ENCOUNTER" FOR THE SECOND BOSS
                Hope this helps

Soul Spear cuts the archer apart, 3 casts at most. Once the archer is dead, the rest of the fight is trivial.

If you're doing it with pure melee, just don't be too greedy with the archer dragonrider. Make sure you have enough of a window to get all the hits in because you can easily be interrupted and/or staggered by the melee dragonrider. I got the strategy down on the second try, but executing it was a bit tricky because I was being too greedy. But if you can avoid getting hit for the duration, the archer is very easy to kill.

Man this fight is so much harder than it looks, I died about 10 or so times the first time playing and the black dragonrider keeps on sniping me while the red one kills me while being staggerd from the arrow shots, then when they both fight together i cant deal enough damage in time to kill the black one cause the other one keeps attacking me while attacking the weaker one...

Not a bad fight at all, I like how they mixed up the gank aspect with a weak archer and a strong melee boi. Makes it much more fun than crap like Lud and Zallen

                        • Anonymous

For some dumb reason I find these dudes harder than Looking Glass Knight, granted that you don’t cheese these guys and hit the Red Dragonrider first and then deal with both Dragonriders with their halberds. Feels just like Ruin Sentinels all over again.

the concept is nice, but done very badly, this could have been O&S of DS2 but instead we have a chonky dragonrider and a less chonky dragonrider, i had some fun against these guys, but they are nothing special once they go both on melee.
The bossfight would have been cooler if Red RIder was normal while Black Rider had a lighter version of the Dragonrider set (less bulky and more form fitting) and instead used the twinblade instead of the halberd and shield.
The bossfight plays out normally untill you kill one and a dragon burst out of a wall/cealing and the other rider becomes mounted (Dragoriders don't ride real dragons in the DS sense, something more similar to dinosaurs if i recall correctly). They could have done it at fromsoft, they had a wivern model and the moveset for an horse like creature (Executioner chariot, that has even breath attack, just change the fog with fire). Also the dragon breaking trough a wall could make the boss room bigger (to help a spellcster player)

so, THESE guys rides dragons right? what if Ornstein of the Old dragonslayer kills his dragon what will happen?

                              • Anonymous

Killed these guys, then killed Looking Glass Knight.

Passed back through on my way to unlock The Embedded later on, and I can still see summon signs (including Pilgrim Bellclaire) in front of their room.

How come? Is there another area boss that I don't know about ?

You enter the fog door after talking with the queen of Drangleic herself. You expect something at Ornstein & Smough caliber. And then... Copy pasted first (depends on the path you choose, Heide's Tower of Flame was mine) boss of the game!

                                  • Anonymous

First, I thought "Hey, this isn't too hard. Just gotta hit this guy in time and block the arrow."

                                    Then he jumped down.

Badly designed boss fight, just like many others in the base game. They didn't manage to create good bosses so they just toss in them in more numbers, "quantity over quality" line of thought.

                                      • Anonymous

I find it funny that they added bellclaire to this fight in SotFS, like "oh no this boss is too 'difficult' for players, how about we make it easier". It's almost insulting how easy this fight is, if you need help with this fight, you probably shouldn't be playing dark souls to begin with.

OMG THIS BOSS IS SO HARD ITS NOT EASY ITS HARD. I USE NIRACL S AND THIS BOSS IS. MY. BANE!!!!!! ONCE THE ARBCHER DROP DOWN I GET ONE SHOT BYY HIM! AND AT THE START ITS HARD KILLING THE FISRT RIDER BECAUSE OF HALBERD CRASH LIGHT CRASH HALBERD BLOCK

                                          • Anonymous

This has to be one of the easiest bosses especially if you have poison/toxic mist or dark fog. (in a NG playthrough at least)

                                            • You know what made the first dragon rider (not really) difficult? Chances are, you didn't have a upgraded weapon therefore, your damage was weak enough that you don't 5 shot him. To balance this for the next fight, they added an archer who couldn't hit to save his life and the health bar of an asmatic dolphin. Tbh I find the first one (slightly) better as he was unique at the time and didn't die as soon as I entered (unless he threw his fat ass of the edge). Do whatever and you'll find some extra souls in your pocket and another boss out the way.

lol why are the weaknesses labeled as poison/magic?? the dragonriders are weak to strike/lightning. is this site ran by monkeys?

                                                • Anonymous

I just did this fight duel welding caesteus (I'm doing a pure brawler build). The first rider went down in 5 or 6 light combos then the second one jumped down and went down in 3 combos. I used the summon outside to take some of the agro away and just tanked a few hits. Aromatic ooze made the fight very one sided.

                                                  • Anonymous

At first I was trying to be conservative and cautious just like with the Ruin Sentinels, but then I discovered this boss is *insanely* weak to fire. A single fireball (granted, Fth 40, with the penal cuffs and a +6 Chaos Fireball while full hollowed, but just your bog standard fireball anyway) took like a fifth of their health. I ended up just lobbing the suckers around while dodging their frankly can't-be-more-telegraphed attacks and literally melted them from a comfy distance.

                                                    • Anonymous

I chose the first corner as a battle position and moved around the boss. Try to read the boss's movement and hide behind his back. Avoid moving outside to prevent being shot. Fighting in a narrow angle, the camera was really hard to see, spinning around the enemy making me dizzy. Really ridiculous when the arrow flies through the enemy and hits you? After the 2nd boss entered the battle. My character could use magic to attack. Magic can recover and I save souls for level up.

                                                      • Anonymous

Lol i just beat this boss as a Hex, strength build using the crypt blacksword i 2 shot the bow weilding one and killed the melee dragonrider in about 6 hits

                                                        • Anonymous

Worst. Boss. Ever. Not only this is actually a recycled boss of the Dragonrider, but this fight is not special considering that you know the original fight at Heide's Tower of Flame (Unless you had cheesed him.) and you are doing it again but with another one (colored black) shooting at you with a greatbow until the red Dragonrider gets to 10 percent HP,in which he helps him by joining in on the fight.

I used demons great hammer and killed the black dragon rider with only 2hits and another one with 5hits it was easy

I used the plus 7 scythe and infused it with lighting. It was pretty damn easy to take the them both out after getting my dodging right.

                                                                • Anonymous
