Small Shields | Strike / Parry | ||

“Small shield used by Volgen Falconers.
Appears like a glistening gold falcon from afar.
Domestic Volgen soldiers are infamously timid,
so it is no wonder that this fierce band of mercenary
falconers was hired to compensate.
The falconers are rumored to be untrusting of others,
and demanding of prompt, full payment. But no wonder;
they deliver much more than they are paid, and are well aware of it.”
Golden Falcon Shield is a Small Shield in Dark Souls 2. Small Shields can be used not only to block an enemy but to parry their attack as well. This allows a riposte, a free attack by the player for a high amount of damage. Enemy attacks can be interrupted with a parry (pressing the Strong Attack button for the shield) and requires practice to learn the timing.
Acquired From:
- In Shaded Woods, follow path to the left above the second bonfire (Ruined Fork Road). After a mini-boss encounter, it is the item on the ground.
- It may also drop from Falconers.
Hints and Tips:
- May be a reference to the character Zarine from a fantasy book series called "the wheel of time", who also goes by the name Faile, which means 'falcon' in one of the languages of that series. Furthermore, the shield is found on a hollow togeather with the dragonslayer's crescent axe, which closely resembles the description of the axe owned by her huband, Perrin Aybara.
- Given the influence of Berserk on Dark souls series, it's a possible reference to Griffith, the leader of " Band of the Hawk " otherwise known as " Lord Falcon, The Hawk, etc.

I love this shield's art design. Overall, it is actually very well-rounded in its defenses, especially for its weight, but, of course, the low stability is a bit of a downside. Unfortunately, its placement in the world is a bit difficult to access early-game, so it will likely already be obsolete by the time you find it.
Am I tripping or was this dropped at Lost Bastille where the Golden Wing Shield is now?
