Mace is a Hammer and one of the available Weapons in Dark Souls 2. Mace can be obtained as starting equipment for the Cleric class. Its notable strength lies in its effectiveness against most enemies in the early game, thanks to its susceptibility to strike damage. The vertical swing arc of the Mace can be limiting when facing groups of enemies. To overcome this, players have the option to dual-wield two fully upgraded maces, providing a more versatile and effective approach in combat.

A club fitted with a head crafted for battle.

The mace is the archetypal blunt weapon. It has a primitive appearance, but also many advantages, including the ability to break the guard of a shield.

Keep the proper distance from your foe, and this can be a very effective weapon.

How to get Mace in Dark Souls 2

DS2 Mace Hints and Tips

  • Most enemies in the first half of the game are vulnerable to strike damage, making the mace a very strong early game weapon, particularly for caster builds as even with little strength it still hits hard.
  • It's biggest weakness is its vertical swing arc, making it less useful against groups, however you can dual wield two fully upgraded maces to cover this weakness.
  • Don't try to block a mace user's attacks repeatedly in PvP, try dodging before 1 or 2 blocks. Blocking mace hits is a big drain on your stamina and will get you staggered fast.

The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.

This and the rapier legit carried me my first playthrough as the explorer. Like another anon said, the Yin and Yang of Dark Souls 2 PVE.

this weapon is ****ing baller as hell for swinging point blank at royal knights in FoTFG and missing 4/5 swings

        • Anonymous

Why the hell would I have 65 str and dex just so I can "out scale" the club? At that point I might as well use another weapon lol

Oh yeah, the Mace. The weapon of choice for any strength build that wants to powerstance weapons, the Mace brings a hefty A scaling to the table. With 50 Strength and 12 Dex you'll be dishing out 370 damage per swing. Why 12 Dex instead of the 7 you need to powerstance these bad boys you ask? Because if you're going to play like you're the king of the game you're going to dress the part in the King's Set. Loads of enemies in this game are wearing suits of armor, meaning that they're vulnerable to you opening an account for them at the First National Bonk. And sure, they have next to no range but when you get all up in your enemies' grills and go Keith Moon on their skulls it won't matter. Then of course there's the rings. First up is the Ring of Blades +2 to crank your damage up by 50. Since you'll be throwing out flurries of attacks like you're the Fist of the North Star you'll get some real mileage out of this bad boy. And yes, that means that instead of 370 damage you'll be dealing 420 damage, for all your stonering needs. And speaking of stonering, the Stone Ring increases your poise damage. Because when you're beating dudes into carbonara sauce you might as well turn this into a murder on the stunlock express. For your third ring the Choloranty Ring to improve your stamina recovery speed because the twin Mace build requires quite a bit of the stuff. As for your final ring... well, you decide. You treat your maces right, so they'll treat you right. And you want a build? Go with the Str/Dex mentioned above. Then go with Vitality 50 because without a shield you'll want to be able to take a hit, Endurance 40 at least for a fat stamina bar, whatever Vitality you need for your armor of choice and put some levels into Adaptability to become the king of rolling. At this point you'll have some game left before the end of your character, so dump the rest into Endurance to become an unstoppable god of asswhoopings. And that's why you pick the Mace, have fun.

Best starting class weapon, hands down. In class of gear that all seems to have terrible range, this one stands out for making up for it with absurdly high damage. Deals strike damage that is resisted by pretty much nothing and most PvE enemies that appear to be wearing armor are actually weak to it. Low stat requirements, great elemental infusions, and fast attack speed make it a flexible and useful weapon for pretty much any class at any point in the game. At 16 strength and 8 dex, possible lowest required stat investment to be powerstanced for any weapon that isn't a dagger makes this an all-right back-up tactic even if you're primarily a spell caster who's just run out of spells. If you didn't start with it, you can pick it up from the blacksmith in Majula.

The range on this thing is abysmal, so you really have to get used to that, but once you do, it's shocking how solid the mace is. Strike damage is absolutely ABSURD in SotFS; the Fire Longsword you get for free, with 12 Str and 10 Dex, will take four two-handed R2 attacks to take down one of the Ironclad Soldiers around the Forest of the Giants, for example. With the mace, you can take it down in just two two-handed R1 attacks. It's crazy how reliable the mace can be, when you get used to it.

Arguably the best PvE weapon in the game. I cleared SoTFS and the three crown expansions power wielding these bad boys.
