Numbness is a Hex in Dark Souls 2. To cast a Hex, you must use a staff/chime or Special Weapons that can cast Hex.
"A hex that transforms its caster's flesh. Temporarily reduces receive damage, but darkens one's sight.
If it cannot be observed, it does not exist. Certainly a common conception, but one with far too many exceptions in this world.
Catalyst: staff"
Acquired From
- Trade the Old Dead One's soul and 5000 souls to Straid of Olaphis
Notes
- Reduces all incoming damage by 35% for 20 seconds, however it will give the player tunnel vision by darkening the sides of the screen. With the changes to spell duration and stats made to this spell, Numbness can last up to 90 seconds.
- This Hex also darkens the blinding mist within the "Crown of the Ivory King" dlc making certain areas easier than they were designed to be.

The dark soul is probably what is referenced by the description. In philosophy we are taught that the argument for there being no soul is because the soul cannot be observed by any instrument of science, thus the argument "If it cannot be observed, it does not exist." seems most fitting for the dark soul itself.

Clearly this spell draws from and fortifies the fact that your health bar is not only your physical state, but your conception of your physical state, hence numbness reduces the damage you take

so ive come to find out that this spell can not stack with resonant flesh and vice versa

This spell combined with very high physical defense armor makes you insanely tanky. Can even break the game.

This spell still surprises people. 35% is nothing to sneeze at, and tunnel vision is usually pretty easy to deal with in PvP

Isn't it weird that the Hex made from the soul of a miracle based god from the previous game isn't cast with a sacred chime?
Pretty underrated honestly, While 35% might not seem like much and the Tunnel vision is a fairly big downside, Learning to play with the tunnel vision isn't too bad and allows you to get away with quite a lot, especially heavier builds using bulky armour or weapons. 35% is to EVERY defense, including elemental, making quite a solid side grade to MB/GMB. Worth using, especially on Melee mages, gives some fun defense options to both Mage builds and Buff Knights
