Old Whip is a Whip and one of the available Weapons in Dark Souls 2. Old Whip is a unique weapon with a backstory shrouded in mystery. It's a worn leather whip that deals extra damage to Hollow enemies, thanks to an ancient blessing that's believed to be the work of a cleric. When wielded, the Old Whip is powerful against Hollow foes but loses durability quickly against armored enemies.

A leather whip that has seen plenty of use.

It appears no different than an ordinary whip, but is charmed by an ancient blessing that boosts damage inflicted on Hollows.

The blessing is likely the work of a cleric, but whether the spell is good or evil is unclear.

Effect: attack boost against Hollows.

How to get Old Whip in Dark Souls 2

DS2 Old Whip Hints and Tips

  • Upgraded with Twinkling Titanite
  • The whip loses durability very quickly if used against enemies with a large degree of armor. It loses durability at a regular pace against enemies with no armor.
  • This weapon has 350 + 71 Attack Rating at 40 dexterity
  • At 20 Dex and 78 Faith, the lightning Old Whip +5 has an attack rating of 260 (245+17) physical damage, and 296 (245+51) lightning damage, a very good weapon in PvE (only on enemies without armor) and PvP.
  • The sprint R1 does almost a full 180 attack which is very strong in pvp.
  • This whip is very desirable for a character based on whip use, as it has the highest physical damage of any whip at +5.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has.

I use this as a sidearm on my hexer. If a mob gets close enough to hit under a barrage of Dark Orbs, it's going to die in 1-2 hits, usually one. Iron Crown basically means infinite durability. While loading it with fire is super tempting, I just keep it pure physical for the damage type spread.

An interesting weapon, very high base damage and good scaling. Needs support in terms of repair powder or other weapons to round out its weaknesses, but it's extremely effective at dealing large amounts of damage in many situations.

For whatever reason (or lack thereof) the developers designed the Flame Weapon pyromancy to function exactly like the other elemental weapon buffs despite the fact that it has no stat requirements. Flame Weapon, like the other elemental weapon buffing spells, gives more fire damage for each point of fire damage already present on the weapon.

When you have McDuff do an elemental infusion on a weapon, he uses the base damage of the weapon to determine how much elemental damage will be added to the new infused version.

In summary: Infuse the Old Whip with Fire and buff it with Flame weapon, invest the 25 character levels you saved in health, endurance, vit, or whatever. It can do 900 damage in a single hit.

Used this whip against Vendrick tonight and was able to take him down pretty easily at lvl 140. The hollow damage bonus really comes in handy, used the knuckle ring to keep up durability.

This weapon is ridiculous, insane DPS at + 5 with lght infusion, 619 atk at high speed, only downside is its durability but if you stockpile a couple whips, its no big deal

A really rewarding weapon to build around.

Mitigate this thing's low durability with "Bracing Knuckle Ring +2", and supplement with the "Repair" sorcery. The latter can even be Simpleton Spiced down to only needing 10 Intelligence. Your payoff for a dedicated ring and spell slot is a weapon with wonderful reach, low stamina cost per swing, masterful mob control, and of course high damage output. The best "Old Whippersnapper" character I've found is with Hexes, since the Hexer Hood adds another Repair cast.

Win with wicked Warlock whip whaps!

Powerstanced this on my 40/40 Str/Dex build and kinda whooped everyone's ass. Probably beacause they were underestimating it and were trying to attack out of hitstun (spoiler: it doesnt work).
And of course the damage is crazy (even more so with RoB +2).

I finished my only whip run and only cried like 10 times I personally wanna flip off everyone who designed enemy placement in this game

get the knuckle ring and its good enough, power stance on +5 for the auto win button, oh ds3 why u do this to me and make whips bad again

I love how some weapons are like references to castlevania like red rust sword being a reference to red rust in sotn and the old whip being a reference to the vampire killer

                      • Anonymous

This whip hits really hard, but due to how quickly it loses durability you'd have to carry around about 3 fully upgraded to get any use out of it

                        • Anonymous

Definitely a Castlevania reference. I made a Simon Belmont build based on this one weapon. I feel like they made it harder to acquire this weapon in SotFS. I had multiple copies for all the different characters I made in the original 360 version. Now I can't get one to save my life. 5 Demon greathammers, 3 channeled tridents, dozens of petrified dragon bones but not a single Old Whip... Either the RNG gods hate me or it doesn't exist in the SotFS version of the game... ::sigh::
