A standard spear.

Spears allow one to attack a foe from a distance, and while holding up a shield.

Thrusting attacks are effective even against opponents with strong defense, but they have a narrow point of contact and won't effectively break through a shielded defense.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".

Strong attack does strike damage, which is good vs armored enemies. This advantage is considerable, try it

Very underrated weapon. Has the same moveset as the Partizan unlike the partizan the spear can be bought very early on in the game. The solid moveset, light weight and decent damage makes this weapon very helpful for any player going for a dex or quality build

After all the countless hours spent playing this game, I only just now discovered a secret about Dark Souls 2's Spear that wasn't present in the first game. The R2 attack for both one and two-handed stances is not just another trust attack. It's a horizontal sweep, a trait that I originally thought was exclusive to the Partizan. This increases the versatility of the basic Spear's moveset tenfold, and since this weapon is available at the start of the game, has very low requirements and excellent reach, the R2 sweep attacks makes taking on those waves of Hollow soldiers in the Forest of Fallen Giants much easier.
