Undead Purgatory Walkthrough

From the Copse

To the right of the first bridge is a second, where there are two Hollows and an Executioner, deal with them quickly and on the ledge is a corpse with a Notched Whip, then follow the path where another four Executioners (replaced with Red Phantom Purgatory Guardians in NG+ onward) on tall pillars, two with whips, two with staffs. Deal with them one by one and head across the bridge where a red phantom with a Greatsword and shield is waiting (he only respawns in NG+ onward, drops Greatsword +3). A few things to note and some strategies to implement:

  • He is susceptible to poison.
  • One of the few enemies in the game who has a strictly limited aggro range. He will typically refuse to cross the midpoint in the bridge. Occasionally he might walk past the first bridge hole and smack you in the face, if you decide to snipe him from behind it, possibly to prevent players from casually knocking him off the bridge where possible.
  • This means he can be taken out with archery as well. Poison arrows, as mentioned above, are particularly effective.
    • STRATEGY: This guy makes Havel look easy. To deal with this rather difficult phantom, first and most important is not letting him hit you, if he staggers you its game over. The best strategy is parrying and backstabbing, his swing patterns are really odd and its difficult to time it right but it shouldn't be too bad once you get it down. It should take about 4-5 before he is defeated and now you can head inside the Purgatory which hold the Executioner's Chariot boss as well as some loot.
    • STRATEGY 2: Run backwards across the bridge. He can't follow you all the way. Find the sweet spot and you can shoot him in the back as he constantly turns around to leave / reengage you. The fight is now trivial.
    • STRATEGY 3: A beautiful cheap way to kill this guy is just to the right of his entrance, at the bridge, is a ledge with an Item (Fire Seed). Jump over to this ledge and you can use your bow to shoot through the iron gate and pepper him in the face. He cannot retaliate. (courtesy of TheBunnyMage).

Defeating the Black Phantom nets you some souls and pride.

Executing the Executioner's Chariot

The mist door leads to the boss fight Executioner's Chariot. The fight takes place in a large circle with a gap in the floor to your right as you enter. You cannot cross this, however the chariot is able to ramp over it meaning it will continue going around the circle until stopped. A cutscene entering the mist shows a skeleton using a lever to open a gate to release the chariot.

[pic of cutscene]

Make your way to your left around the circle to get to this lever. Two Necromancers and a group of skeletons will attempt to prevent this, in addition to the chariot itself. Small alcoves on either walls allow you to avoid taking damage from the chariot as it speeds by. Skeletons often allow themselves to be taken out by the chariot but this won't matter until the necromancers are dead, as they will continue to revive them. The first Necromancer is on the left about three hiding spots down. The second is near the end of the circle on the right (almost directly across from the lever). After defeating them, hold up to see if any skeletons decide to creep up. The chariot should finish the job if so.

Pulling the lever causes the gate to come down and the chariot crashes, killing the driver. However, it is the two headed horse that is the real threat and that happened to survive -and you've just pissed it off. If you don't wish to fight the horse, you can also find a good sniper spot and used ranged attacks. A good aim, and lightning or magic, should do the trick. Don't try to lock on with lightning and backstep afterwards because you move forward when you use that. Eventually the horse will run down the cliff and the rider lies half dead nearby, attack him once and he will die.

Defeating the horse allows you to freely loot the corpses scattered around the area. From the beginning of the area, there are four that all carry a Fading Soul. The last corpse is hanging off the ledge of the gap, near where you lowered the gate. That corpse holds a Soul of a Brave Warrior. Directly after the gate on the left is a door that leads to a staircase. At the top of the stairs, a small elevation can be seen. It can be accessed by carefully inching around the ledge from the top of the stair. A corpse on this ledge leads to 2x Cracked Red Eye Orb

At the top of the stairs is a small room with three statues, a bonfire, and Gren, the covenant leader for the Brotherhood of Blood. He will allow access to the covenant to any player holding a Token of Spite, which is acquired by invading and killing another player (a found token will also allow you to join).

I just don't get why this boss has it's own mini castle let alone area name. There's nothing to be explored once the horse is dead.

I really like this boss, the arena is very unique and adds a fun challenge. But the run to the boss door is an abysmal slog

        • Tried editing this page because I had a hard finding the boss, even after reading this... (didn't notice the second bridge at all...), but the editor is also broken here...
          So here it is :
          - From the second bonfire (under the bridge), after crossing the stone bridge, make a 180 on the right, and there is a second stone bridge. Cross it and follow the path.
          - From the third bonfire (undead refuge) : go back and cross the metal bridge then go directly left and drop down right next to the smaller stone bridge, cross it and follow the path.

          • When getting to the boss is harder than the boss itself...

Falling down trough the bridge after dealing with the four executioner was a nice touch.... :/

I shot the red phantom through the metal fence, from one of the platforms that are on either side by the end of the bridge (you have to jump over). Takes bit of patience.
This also allows you to quickly run past the executioners with out killing them. They will just turn around once you reach one of the platforms.

the red phantom has no poise at all, so either get a curved great sword or just any heavy sword and you can just stun lock him for eternity

I killed black phantom with greatsword using rapier and poise breaking ring. R2 and he just staggers nonstop.
