Dark Fog is a Hex in Dark Souls 2. To cast a Hex, you must use a staff/chime or Special Weapons that can cast Hex.

"A hex that releases a temporary localized mist.
Those who breathe in the mist are instantly assailed by poison.

This hex is regarded as a poison due to the outward symptoms, but in fact the mist eats away at the target's inner essence. Just the traits that led to the prohibition of hexing.

Catalyst: staff"

Acquired From

  • Purchased from Straid of Olaphis for 5200 souls, Found on a body in the bottom of The Gutter.

Notes

  • Poison damage is very high and should make quick work of most foes.
  • Poison fills up faster and does more damage than regular poison from weapons and enemies. The poison builds up considerably faster when cast with a Bat Staff, before Calibration 1.06. Once applied this Hex deals 15 damage per half a second for approximately 1095 damage before fading, tested with different staffs (Including Bat Staff) on various enemies.
  • This Hex works on all bosses (Except Vendrick), however, the amount of poison buildup required differs. False information, this spell does not seem work on toxic immune bosses such as Fume Knight.
  • Highly recommended to scatter the fog with Dark Witchtree Branch and Clear Bluestone Ring +2 since the poison buildup stacks with multiple fogs.
  • NOTE: As of regulation 1.06 the Bat staff with this hex no longer instantly poisons enemy foes, the poison effect for the staff only applies when attacking with the staff.

I've done a int/fth build recently, and you don't know the value of on demand poison until you use this spell, very good utility and most enemies don't take more than 1 cast to poison

its actually SUPER useless though. the moment you cast dark fog at literally any enemy or boss, they just immediately charge at you, running away from the fog, which means the buildup didnt tick enough so they were unaffected and not poisoned. it really only works on ranged targets that tend to stand still more but those are usually never clumped up for it to be worth it. useless spell. just use dark orb all day everyday

I've played the game since its release, first time i'm trying this.

Doesn't seem to poison bosses. Tried it on last giant, scorpion boss and fake ornstein.

Worked on some enemies, but didn't work on the old knights.

I cast it 6 times on bosses, thinking maybe it needed more than one casting to trigger, but did not poison them. Used sunset staff.

Does intelligence/faith affect buildup/damage? If this is the only hex I use is it worth it to lower the requirements with incenses?

Can't find this answer anywhere. I'm assuming stats don't affect it.

Works similar to poison mist: same damage and build up. Differences: color, catalyst, dark fog has twice as many casts for twice as many attunement slots, dark fog has longer range at which you can place the cloud and poison mist doesn't have any stat requirements. Either one stacks with toxic mist just fine.
