Old Knight is an enemy in Dark Souls 2 (DKS2). They are first encountered immediately after entering Heide's Tower of Flame through the Majula waterway. Enemies have their own behavior and unique attacks, killing enemies provide various drops that reward players with items and souls.

Dark Souls 2 Old Knight Information

"Old Knights are giant sentinels from an ancient time, when the Heide Kingdom reigned. They are reminiscent of the brass giants from Dark Souls I
Old Knights have fairly high HP, damage output, and staggering attacks, but slow movement and attack speed
Old Knights may use ultra greatswords, swords and shields, or great hammers. They all have telegraphed and relatively slow swing speeds
Old Knights cannot be staggered, backstabbed, or parried. But they are fairly easy to circle strafe, and their attacks are easy to roll through
Old Knights are weak against magic and strike (i.e. mace) type attacks

Old Knight Strategy Tips in DKS2

  • Circle around them as they attack; try to get behind them if you can. Wait until the knight has done his three strikes before attacking. Try to avoid fighting them near the edges, as their attacks have very strong knockback
  • Weapons with strike attacks recommended. The Mace (buy in Majula from the blacksmith for 1200 souls) works very well (no elemental infusion recommended). Usually they die after 3-4 hits from a mace, so evade all attacks and spam R1 and they should be dead. (Confirmed)
  • A shield with 100 physical damage reduction is very helpful in these fights, in combination with the circling technique mentioned above. Keep your shield up as you circle/strafe during their attacks, then drop it to recover stamina as you rush in to attack. Make sure you have enough stamina to roll away after you attack. Rinse, repeat.
  • Circle them to the right (Shield) while it prepares its first strike. Keep being on his shield side until the second strike is done then change to his sword side. You can attack if you are on his sword side. Be carfull of going to sword side to early since he can change direction and hit you.

*For those who lack the skill to successfully dodge their attacks, try leading them behind you until they stop. Immediately run up to them, dodge their first set of attacks, then hit them once. Assuming you did it correctly, they will not attack afterwards, and begin backing up again. Repeat until they are dead.
*Another method is to lead them to a staircase and keep them there. Stand lower than them whenever possible, as it makes dodging attacks much easier. Standing higher does the same, but requires you to run slightly farther, and makes it much less likely that your own attacks will hit.

I have enough cracked blue eye orbs to distribute to the entire human population. In other words; drop me the ****ing armor and weapons already.

Weirdly enough, despite the fact that you can find Old Knight Halberds,Pikes and Greatshields, the Old Knights ingame never wield those weapons, I can only imagine they originally intended for there to be Halberd/Pike and Greatshield-Wielding Old Knight variants, I imagine they probably would've been like much slower, weaker and less annoying/erratic versions of the Warhammer and Greatshield-Wielding Drakekeepers if they ever existed ingame

The two-handed Mace ones are probably the most difficult variant to deal with, they have very accurate tracking being able to quickly pivot towards you mid-combo to hit you if you try to kite them, meaning you can only really dodge and block to avoid getting hit, they do massive poise damage easily staggering you even if you have high poise, and they're noticeably tankier than the other two aswell as being harder, the sword+shield ones have very simple, slow and easily dodged/blocked swings for most of their moves, and the greatswords ones are the hardest-hitting ones, but are also significantly flimsier than the other two and have slow attacks with little to no tracking, the Mace ones are the most troublesome, especially in groups or paired with other enemies like the Amana Mages

Could be me but, I feel like the knights wielding the great sword have less defense/hp than the mace or shield knights

Am I crazy or do they stop spawning after awhile? Like I've killed the first two you meet like 20 times and then they stopped spawning

Those guys are very good for starters to learn how to dodge, 3 or rarely 4 hits combos with pauses, giving opportunities to attack and punishing greedy players.

I'm wearing most of the Heide Knight set, and when I agro the old knight outside the dragonrider, he approaches me but does not attack. Even though I'm drilling arrow after arrow into him, it's like he recognizes me as a Heide Knight and backs away. Quite humorous, really.

Notes: It is difficult to get out of the way of their attacks of you are close to them, they can somehow hit you mid roll and you can't back away from them in time.

Notes: they appear non-resistant to fire, cannot be critical-attacked in any way, equipment can be broken while worn on them via acid, a nd they will stagger the player regardless of poise count.
