The Gutter

the gutter-area.pngThe Gutter is a Location in Dark Souls 2. A forsaken area of darkness and poison, where things are abandoned and since forgotten. Its lore is reminiscent of the Valley of Defilement from Demon's Souls, and aesthetically it is an amalgam of that world and Blighttown from Dark Souls. The statues will shoot poison darts at the player. Hit them with a weapon and they will break (neither arrows nor bolts will break them, except for Greatarrows).

The Gutter Walkthrough

This guide does its best to get every possible item in one pass. So if you follow the guide every step, no matter how off the beaten-path it may seem, you should have no problems.

Note: It is a good idea to turn your TV's brightness, contrast and background settings to as much as possible (without having to wear sunglasses to play) if you are playing this area without any scounce lit. You'll be able to avoid unnecessary falls and spot near enemies.

Before coming to this area stock up on anti-poison items, flame butterflies and equip your shield in your right hand. You want your shield always up and a torch prohibits this if it's in your left hand. Alternately, If you have Cast Light magic, you can skip needed a torch all the time, but it's still helpful for lighting Sconces and trust me YOU WANT TO.

A whip is handy for destroying statues. It can be used to break statues from a distance, and the attack also goes through walls, allowing you to destroy them from behind cover.

Immediately after entering this area you will be on a ledge with multiple stone statues that can and will spit poison at you. Destroy them. Drop down to the wooden ramp way below and move right and drop over again to the wood below. At the top of this ramp is a Hollow and a few jars. There doesn't appear to be a way back onto the ramp if you venture onto this ledge so don't do it. (If you wear the cat ring, you can sprint jump to the bonfire while taking little damage.) Head down and the floor will soon break under you. Don't worry, this is actually a good thing as a Bonfire now sits behind you. Also on this area is a Sconce and a Jar hiding Dung Pie x2. Head back to the bonfire and walk up the the wooden bridge. There is a Sconce in the left corner but stay very close to the right edge of this platform when walking. If you walk in the middle of this platform the floor will collapse under you, only this time you will be in a room with 4 Hollows. This is one of the many split paths in this place so let's cover one scenario at a time.

On the top of the platform, move straight ahead to meet a Large Mutant Dog. Kill him then light the Sconce in his room. Head up the ramp to the right to find another Sconce and a Hollow. A Poison statue is also hanging so break it. (Note: From here you can snipe some hollows hanging off a ledge to your right.) Head up the ramp here to find another Sconce and an area you can drop down to below. Down here are multiple Hollows that will ambush you as soon as you drop and a Jar hiding a Soul Of A Nameless Soldier x1. Break the poison statues to make the area as safe as possible.

Off the right side is a wooden ramp leading up, but go off the far left side near the wall with a Sconce above onto a winding stone pathway that leads to a jump to the building ahead. Drop down to ground level and circle the building to find a Sconce and a few poison statues. Inside the ground floor of the building are 3 Jars with a whopping nothing inside so head up the ladder to the left of the doorway. Once on the roof, you will see an area to your left which you can jump to, hold on a second rambo, first circle the small structure on the roof to reach a Sconce and more importantly a poison statue that will hinder you after you jump across. Break it then make the jump. To your left is a chest containing Ring Of Soul Protection x1. All the way right is a Sconce and a Poison Statue. From the Sconce you can drop back down to the original platform we were at before we dropped off to the stone pathway. But before we do that, return towards the chest and face the building once more to see a small ledge below which you can jump to. Inside the room is a chest containing Twinkling Titanite x1 and Small Smooth And Silky Stone x3. Once that's done return outside and drop back down to ground level. Climb up the ladder once more, make the jump towards the chest and go drop down to the right of the Sconce. Turn left and past the Sconce off the edge onto the wooden ramp we skipped earlier. Head up to soon reach 3 Jars, one holding a Lifegem x1. Past the jars is a ledge leading down to the first bonfire.

Go back up the small bridge and move towards the middle of the platform to have the floor break under you. Defeat the 4 Hollows and head out through the wall onto the walkway. Ahead below you are two hollows and a Sconce you can light to the left. Take out the Hollow without the torch using ranged attacks and jump across. ( Torchbro is helpful to light the platform for your jump). On this platform is another Sconce, a ladder leading up and a fog door in the distance. (Be careful because after you jump to this platform Royal Sorcerer Navlaan could invade, if you released him from his prison in Aldia's Keep). Up the ladder is a Sconce and a cave with multiple Poison Statues. On the far end is a Large Locked Door. Behind it lies many many Poison Statues guarding a Jars which contains Havel's Armor Set. To open the door you need the Forgotten Key which is located in Black Gulch so ignore it and head back out. Facing the fog door, head forwards and watch out for the hole in the floor up ahead. On this platform are 2 more Poison Statues in the right corner and a Sconce on the left. On your right is building with a tempting ledge jump, but let's get there another way. Drop down through the hole in the floor into the room below. and continue through the doorway to reach a ledge with 3 jars. Break them to reveal a corpse holding Dark Pyromancy Flame x1 and Rotten Pine Resin x1. Careful as behind the wall to your left are a few Hollows as well as a Mutant Dog. Clear the room and head up the ladder to find another Hollow and a Sconce to your right. Head up the ladder on the far side of the room. Upstairs are a Sconce and 3 more Jars, one of which holds Soul Of A Nameless Soldier x1. From the Sconce, DON'T head around the outside ledge as there is nothing but a trap drop and poison statues. (Note: From this ledge, it's a short jump back to the first bridge near the first bonfire. Helpful if you fell through the trap floor in the beginning.) Near the jars drop down to the platform on your right. CAUTION as when you drop down an infinitely exploding zombie on the bridge will attack shortly. Break the poison statues, kill the Mutant Dog above if you can and light the Sconce. Head across the bridge.

On the other side is a Mutant Dog and a Hollow that will drop down from above. Kill them and go up the ladder to find a Sconce, a Poison Statue and a Chest containing Black Firebomb x3. Go back down the ladder. At the bottom of the ladder, face it and move around the right side. Head straight to a small wooden beam hanging over the far right side. From it, drop down carefully to the wood below, then drop again to the platform with a Hollow. Circle around the structure to find 2 Jars hiding a corpse holding Titanite Chunk x1. Slightly past them is a Sconce. Move back around the structure and through the hole in the wall to drop down into the next room. Ahead is a Sconce and 2 more jars on the far left containing the Tattered Cloth Set. Jump across to the pathway ahead. To your left is a Sconce. Be careful here as a Hanging Poison Statue will shoot poison at you and you can't reach it to break it - Edit: Firebombs can break the statue and reach the hollows on the cliff. After lighting the Sconce 3 Hollows will climb the cliff behind you and attack. Head forward to find a ladder and and chest behind it. There are two Hollows playing dead in front of it. The Chest contains Ring Of The Evil Eye x1. Climb up the ladder and kill the two Hollows faking death. Ahead is a Sconce and to your right are jars holding Soul Of A Proud Knight x1. Circle around the structure to find an Exploding Zombie and 2 more Jars which hold Bandit Greataxe x1. From here you can make a small drop to a slanted platform with a Sconce. Don't worry you can jump back up, or you can down to another platform with one poison statue. From there fallow the wall to the right to drop down again to a path that leads to an urn containing Flame Butterfly x2. Then you can drop to the platform with the chest containing the Firebombs. From the jars holding Soul Of A Proud Knight, circle back around to find a small ladder leading to the roof of the structure. Up here is a zipline that will take you to the opposite side of The Gutter.

After riding the zipline. go straight ahead and light the Sconce. Drop off the left edge from the sconce to reach the bridge from earlier (where the exploding mummy attacked). Go to the other side and head across the wooden beam path to the right, break the Poison Statues and climb up the ladder. Up top is a Sconce and a Bridge. Cross the Bridge, kill the Mutant Dog, break the Poison Statue, and then go light the Sconce. Mind the hole in the floor to the left. If you fall through the hole in the floor there may be a Mutant Dog. In that room are also some jars hiding a corpse with Black Firebomb x2, but it's not worth it cause there is a jump to a ledge full of poison spitting statues to get away from this area. If you do decide to jump down, move to the outer ledge and jump across towards the multiple Poison Jars to be on the Bonfire platform as found later in this guide. Note you won't be able to get back to the bridge mentioned next without fast traveling all the way back to the start. Ignore the hole and head across the bridge ahead and light the Sconce. Turn right and you will soon be at the entrance of a cave. Past the entrance is a Poison Statue and a Sconce. Back at the cave, Inside are enemies waiting to ambush you so move cautiously inside. Inside is a chest containing Wicked Eye Greatshield x1. Outside the cave, move along the left and light the Sconce. Down below is a fog wall and a Mutant Dog. Drop down and fight him, clear the area of Poison statues and smash the jars in the middle of the area for Poison Arrow  x20.

Through the fog door a bonfire is slightly ahead, but we will get to that in a minute. First let me point out that while still in the area you just killed the Mutant Dog in, on the path to the left past some Poison Statues is a small cave. Inside is a Rotten Vermin (Giant Ant Queen) that emits constant blue gas. DO NOT KILL THIS GIANT ANT, no matter how terrifying it may seem. This giant ant is actually friendly and will not attack the player, and the gas released will cure poison (at the cost of slight equipment durability damage). She is guarded by Poison Ticks. You can lure them out or take them from a distance to avoid damage. After killing them, move deeper into the room and break the Poison Statues and the 2 Jars to collect Poison Moss x4.

Let's head through the fog door. Inside are a few hollows and Poison Statues. There are also multiple ladders as well but most are pointless so we will focus on the important ones.First, ignore everything and head straight to the opposite wall in the room. To the left are some hollows. On this wall is a breakable section that leads outside. A Bonfire is to your left. (Note: Again, mostly all other ladders here are useless, except for one that leads back up from below .) So upon entering from the bonfire, head straight and towards the jars in the upper left. These hide a ladder and also Dung Pie x3. Climb down and drop off the edge ahead onto a rock platform holding 2 jars. One of which holds Rotten Pine Resin x3. Drop down off the left side onto another rocky platform to find a chest containing Great Club x1. Take the ladder down but be careful as there are many Hollows waiting at the bottom. From the bottom of the ladder head straight towards some jars holding Lifegem x20! (NO that's NOT a typo :P ). From here, head left and you will see multiple unusual looking jars blocking a hole in the wall. Ignore these for now and keep going left to find 2 regular jars holding Dark Fog x1 and Torch x1. To the left even more is a ladder which eventually leads back up to the main room next to the Bonfire. Return to the peculiar jars. WARNING: Break them from a distance if you can as they contain a liquid that does corrosive damage to your armor. Through the hole in the wall is a drop down to a Sconce and a corpse holding Fragrant Branch Of Yore x1. Up ahead is a fog door leading to Black Gulch.

This is one of the many split paths in this place so let's cover one scenario at a time.

On the top of the platform, move straight ahead to another platform with Sconce, light it and head up the ramp to the right to find another Sconce and a Hollow. A Poison statue is also hanging so break it. Head up the ramp here to find another Sconce and an area you can drop down to below. Down here are multiple Hollows and a Coal Tar hiding in one of the tar pools. Break jars and loot Soul Of A Nameless Soldier x1. Off the right side is a wooden ramp leading up, but go off the far left side near the wall with a Sconce above onto a winding stone pathway that leads to a jump to the building ahead. Drop down to the ground level and circle the building to find a Sconce and a few poison statues. Inside the ground floor of the building are 3 Jars with a whopping nothing inside so head up the ladder to the left of the doorway. Once on the roof, you will see an area to your left that you can jump to, hold on a second Rambo, first circle the small structure on the roof to reach a Sconce and more importantly a poison statue that will hinder you after you jump across. Break it and then make the jump. To your left is a chest containing Ring Of Soul Protection. All the way right is a Sconce and a Poison Statue (BEWARE: lighting this Sconce will most likely trigger Melinda the Butcher invasion). From the Sconce you can drop back down to the original platform we were at before we dropped off to the stone pathway. But before we do that, return towards the chest and face the building once more to see a small ledge below which you can jump to. Inside the room resides a Mimic, items dropped from him usually fall through the floor, down to the lower room. Use hole in the floor to reach the lower room and loot items dropped from Mimic: Lightning Winged Spear and Dark Armor. Once that's done return outside and drop back down to the ground level.

Defeat Hollows and head to the doorway blocked by a jar. From here you can see quite a remarkable platform with 6 Sconces. Make some distance and do a long jump (beware: after you jump onto this platform Royal Sorcerer Navlaan could invade, if you released him from his prison in Aldia's Keep). After lighting all Scounces head up to the ladder. Upstairs is a Sconce and a cave with multiple Poison Statues. On the far end is a Large Locked Door. Behind it lies lots of Poison Statues guarding jars which contain best physical defence set in the game - Havel's Armor Set. To open the door you need the Forgotten Key, which is located in Black Gulch so ignore it and head back out. Return to 6 Sconces and proceed to the next platform. Light 2 Sconces out there and drop down through the hole in the floor (before dropping down its a good idea to snipe an Exploding Mummy on the bridge above). Continue through the doorway to reach a ledge with 3 jars. Break them to reveal a corpse holding Dark Pyromancy Flame and Rotten Pine Resin x1. Enter the doorway you passed before and you will find yourself in the room full of weird looking jars closely resembling a heart (breaking them causes armor durability degradation). A Hunting Dog can be found among the jars in the far left corner of this room as well as some Hollows, kill them and head to the ladder. There is nothing interesting on the second floor, one Hollow and a Sconce. Climb the ladder to reach the third (and the last) floor of this building. Upstairs are 3 jars, one of which contains Soul Of A Nameless Soldier x1 and a group of 5 corpses, each holding a treasure. Grab Twinkling Titanite x1, Human Effigy x1, Fragrant Branch of Yore x1 and Smooth & Silky Stone x2 from them. Behind the Sconce, there is an outside ledge, DON'T proceed too far on this ledge (past big group of Posion Statues) as floor may break and you will get yourself killed. (Note: From this ledge, it's a short jump back to the first bridge near the first bonfire. Helpful if you fell through the trap floor in the beginning.) From this floor make a small drop down to the platform with 3 Sconces. Light them and cross the bridge.

On the other side are multiple Hollows and a Hunting Dog which may (or may not) come from neighbouring room across the small ramp to the left. Kill them and go up the ladder to find a Sconce, a Poison Statue and a chest containing Black Firebomb x3. Go back down the ladder. At the bottom of the ladder, face it and move around the right side. Head straight to a small wooden ramp hanging over the far right side. From here you can see a Heide Knight sitting on the ledge. Kill him to obtain Heide Lance and Heide Knight Iron Mask. Be careful, there is a Hanging Poison Statue that you cannot reach, try to snipe it with Firebombs. Light a Sconce down the ledge and proceed forward to the ladder and the chest containing Aurous Set. Climb a long way up to the top. Right next to you is a corpse holding Estus Flask Shard. Ahead is a Sconce and to your right are jars containing Soul Of A Proud Knight x1. Circle around the structure to find 2 more Jars containing Bandit Greataxe x1. From here you can make a small drop to a slanted platform with 2 Hollows. Then, drop down to another platform with one Poison Statue. From there follow the wall to the right to drop down again to a path that leads to an urn containing Flame Butterfly x2. Now you can drop to the platform with the chest that previously contained Firebombs. Make your way back to the top platform. Climb up to the roof of the structure. Up here is a zip line that will transport you on top of the 3 level building with heart-like jars that you visited previously.

After riding the zip-line, go straight ahead and light the Sconce. Proceed forward and drop down through the hole. Drop to platform with 3 Sconces again and cross the bridge. Now turn left and cross the small ramp. There might be a Hunting Dog if you did not kill it before. Climb up the ladder and proceed to the bridge. You may find yourself standing on a big open platform with another bridge connected to it. Mind the hole in the floor to the left, it leads to a room with another Hunting Dog and a jar containing Black Firebomb x2. But it's not worth dropping down now because there is a jump to a ledge full of Poison Statues to get away from this area. If you do decide to jump down, move to the outer ledge and jump across towards the multiple Poison Statues to be on the Bonfire platform as found later in this guide. Note you won't be able to get back to the bridge mentioned next without fast traveling all the way back to the start. Ignore the hole and head across the bridge ( Exploding Mummy patrols this bridge, be careful). Continue forward and then turn right to the entrance of a cave. Inside are multiple flying insect-like enemies waiting to ambush you, wipe them out and loot Wicked Eye Greatshield from a chest. Make your way out of the cave and drop down to the platform with Fog Gate (before dropping down its a good idea to snipe an Exploding Mummy which resides down there). Clear the area of Poison Statues and Hollows, smash the jars in the middle of the area to get Poison Arrow  x20. Head to a small cave with blue fog coming from it. You can lure them out or take them from a distance to avoid doing damage to the Queen. After killing them, move deeper into the room and break the Poison Statues and the 2 Jars to collect Poison Moss x4.

Let's head through the fog door. Inside are a few hollows and Poison Statues. There are multiple ladders, but most of them are pointless so we will focus on the important ones. First, ignore everything and head straight to the opposite wall in the room. To the left are some Hollows. On this wall is a breakable section that leads outside. A Bonfire is to your left. Rest at the bonfire if you want, then head back into the room with all the ladders. So upon entering from the bonfire, head straight and towards the jars in the upper left. These hide a ladder and also Dung Pie x3. Climb down and drop off the edge ahead onto a rock platform holding 2 jars. One of which holds Rotten Pine Resin x3. Drop down off the left side onto another rocky platform to find a chest containing Great Club x1. Take the ladder down, but be careful as there are many Hollows waiting at the bottom. If you have lit all the Sconce in the Gutter an NPC invasion will trigger. The invader is Gutter Denizen, a mage, he drops the Black Witch Veil Set. Explore this area, break all jars to obtain Lifegem x20, Dark Fog x1 and Torch x1. Finally, find a hole in the wall blocked by heart-like jars, break them and drop down onto the ledge. Light the Sconce and grab Fragrant Branch Of Yore x1. Up ahead is a fog door leading to Black Gulch.

Okay but it make no sens I did the entire area without a single problem. I reach the black gulch get killed and now I can make it without an hollow backstabbing me, a mummy exploding on me or falling down invisible holes. I'm about to lose my freaking sanity. It's literally impossible that I got unlucky exactly at the same spot for over 3 hours!

In the PS4 doesn't rot equip but I lead the little bug to the saint statue and it stop spitting poison. However the bug will not follow me.. I believe if we can get the bugs to follow to the boss path it deactivate the poison statues. Just a theory.

For the regular version (not Scholar of the First Sin), there exists only ONE Fragrant Branch of Yore; it is located at the very end after dropping down to the Black Gulch entrance. Of the other two identified (both being SOTFS only), one is incorrectly said to exist near the end in the ladder room of the regular version

There is an area where a Mimic is, I mistook that for a treasure with "Twinkling Titanite and Smooth and Silkies", it drops Dark Armor and Lightning Winged Spear. Its drop WILL drop below to another level of the wooden structure, where it is hard to get to, and I had to go there. When I did, I got the above treasure "Dark Armor" which isnt listed on this page. Message there: Hurrah for Mimicry!

it really needs to be updated, there's several places where i know you can jump to without dying even without the cat ring, and the sconces are all over the place... and i'm not even sure they're in the right places.

Estus Flask Shard on SotFS29 Aug 2016 11:01

Around the area where you find the Tattered Cloth Set, there is an Estus Flask Shard to be found. I don't remember exactly where, but I know I got it. Also, the part that says: "After lighting the Sconce 3 Hollows will climb the cliff behind you and attack.", is not correct anymore.
