Twisted Barricade is a Hex in Dark Souls 2. To cast a Hex, you must use a staff/chime or Special Weapons that can cast Hex.

"A hex that distorted local space.
For a brief moment, spells are deflected.

Hexer Gilleah never took an apprentice, making it unclear how his spells were passed down.
It is even possible that hexes originated from another source entirely.

Catalyst: staff"

Acquired From

  • This spell is located in Doors of Pharros. Gyrm's Respite bonfire. Proceed through the dungeon til you reach the ladder. At the top of the ladder to the left should be a corpse holding the hex.

how fast is the casting? because if it's any slower than rolling, it really is nearly useless in most situations, unless you know you're about to fight a heavy spellcaster

This isn't very useful if both players have the same skill level. Rolling/sidestepping is, economically speaking, better than wasting 2 spell slots and some spices.

That being said, it can be used to confuse new players and make them panic during invasions; many are mages, and most mages hate falling back on melee options when their spells fail. 1.5 seconds is also 3-5x longer than iframes from a roll, and it has a tiny aoe that -supposedly- protects allies within touching range, as well. As an added bonus, it prevents knockdown from a spell such as Flame Swathe, not sure about knockups from firestorms.

Plus it's really cool to counterspell someone's homing soulmasses and a crystal spear with a single gesture.

1.5 seconds?!?! Seriously this has to be the most useless spell in the game. 2 slots for a base of one use for 1.5 seconds of magic invulnerability.
