Greatsword is an Ultra Greatsword and one of the available Weapons in Dark Souls 2. Greatsword is an ultra greatsword characterized by its long blade. The weapon can be upgraded using regular Titanite up to +10, and after the 1.08 update, it boasts impressive S scaling in Strength at +10.

A straight sword with a very long blade. One of few ultra greatswords. No human was intended to wield a sword of this weight or destructivenes.

Only a few famed warriors have ever wielded this great blade, for it challenges the very limits of human ability.

How to get Greatsword in Dark Souls 2

DS2 Greatsword Hints and Tips

  • Upgraded with regular Titanite to +10.
  • Regulation 1.08 updated this weapon to have S STR Scalling at +10. At Normal +10 with 50 Strength and 10 required Dexterity, this weapon has an attack rating of 579. 629 with Ring of Blades +2.
  • Be wary of using this in tight hallways. In the current game build, if you are auto-targeting and backpedaling, you will attack in the direction you are walking and not the direction you are facing.
  • Trivia: Guts from Berserk (anime/manga) uses an giant two-handed sword similar to this one, called the Dragonslayer. The Greatsword is most likely a reference due to the developers loving the Berserk series. Players looking for another Ultra Greatsword like the Dragonslayer could try the Crypt Blacksword, although that requires NG+ or using a Bonfire Ascetic and is also shorter and wider than the original Dragonslayer.

The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".

Alright weapon for PVE considering your options and even though it’s outclassed by FUGS it’s a good weapon to get you there.

Trash ass weapon in PvP. I’ve killed so many hosts using this weapon because the weapon is so slow and I’ve gotten TONS of backstabs on people. The 2Hand moveset is also bad and since most people will be using it it’s really easy to backstab players simply rolling into or side of the attack. The attack is also pretty slow in general. If you wanna use an Ultra in PVP use FUGS or the Zweihandler

One R1 can't stagger most filler DLC enemies even with Stone Ring so other UGS become more desirable at that point which can with Stone Ring and their two handed R1 like the Drakekeeper UGS.

Literally the only reason I didn't use this thing for the whole game was because the Fume Ultra Greatsword and Ivory King Greatsword exist, this is the closest thing to perfection you can get with a strength weapon imo, massive damage, excellent reach due to it's huge length, great scaling and a very versatile and fairly diverse moveset that has almost everything you could want in a UGS Moveset, it's not too slow either for a weapon of it's size too and it's visually an absolutely beautiful 8 foot long hunk of black raw coarse steel to boot
And it has pretty modest requirements for what it is too!
            what's not to love?
the only real bad thing about it (besides typical UGS issues like being clunky to use compared to smaller weapons if you're unfamiliar with aiming your attacks manually) is that it's really heavy so you will have to invest in Vitality a bit if you wanna effectively use it without having to skimp on armor but that's a given with most of the stronger strength-oriented weapons anywho

            • Anonymous

Overall good weapon for pvp or pve, though slower weapons are always more susceptible to getting parried.

In ds2 two handing will effectively double your str for the purpose of meeting requirements as opposed to 1.5x increase in ds1 or ds3, but this increase is NOT considered for scaling. Therefore only 14 str is required to 2h this weapon.

The 2h moveset for this weapon is very lacking in variety, and the weapon has substantial str scaling at S when upgraded to +10. This all means that players need to invest appropriately to fully realize the effectiveness this weapon has to offer.

The fact that this sword is called Greatsword even when it is an Ultra Greatsword in this game while in Dark Souls 1 is called Ultra Greatsword when it was just a Greatsword in that game

                • Anonymous

this is the one weapon that i believe could cut someone up in half in one swing if it was realistic, it' just a massive very sharp mass of iron, hell, it could probably easily cut off the limbs of giants too.

                  • Anonymous

I find this weapon overrated, it’s always missing/too slow for the hordes they throw at you. Maybe by the end game and for some boss fights it’s good but for basic PVE I find something faster much more practical so you can recover from a mistake/mis-click faster.

                    • Anonymous

Great damage but I don't recommend for the beggining of the game because the enemies are too fast and this weapon is slow.

                      • Anonymous

Ngl, If I could make love with a weapon, it'd be this beautiful beast, hands down, carried my big fat ass throughout almost the entire game including the DLCs up until I got the Fume Ultra Greatsword.

This thing continued the trend of one of the best Ultra Greatswords being the very first one that you're going to get in most playthroughs, this beauty is a fantastic weapon all round, very long reach, a versatile moveset with an answer to most situations like the vertical 2-handed r1s that have long range and can hit enemies behind you, wide sweeping r1s when 1-handed that plow through groups of enemies, 2-handed golf swing heavy attack that does high damage and sends enemies flying and its follow-up is just as strong while being way faster, and its 2-handed rolling attack is very effective against enemies vulnerable to thrust damage and helps you take them out a lot quicker and it combos into the standard 2-handed r1 which comes out way faster than normal if you follow up the 2-handed rolling attack with it, and not to mention it has very high base damage, and excellent strength scaling meaning it will start doing some absolutely disgusting damage when it starts getting upgraded,

Overall this weapon might be a good candidate for best Ultra Greatsword in the game, however I'd say it gets beaten out by the Fume Ultra Greatsword, which has a better moveset, better overall damage, and it has strong block stats to help compensate for its weight, and that 2-handed L2 is extremely useful and powerful if used well, and it is roughly the same length, the only thing outright worse about it is that it's significantly heavier, and it has lower counter damage meaning that it does moderately less damage in some circumstances, and it can't be buffed,

But regardless, this weapon is absolutely fantastic and can easily take you through the whole game, one of the best Ultra Greatswords despite the fact that it's the first one you get most of the time. (Unless you're lucky enough to have a greatsword wielding old knight drop the Old Knight Ultra Greatsword for you, which is generally rare if you don't outright go out of your way to farm it and farming it can be time-consuming, and not to mention the Old Knight Ultra Greatsword is vastly inferior to this weapon, particularly on a strength build)

I like to hold a shortsword or estoc in my offhand for quick pokes or hallways. Otherwise, swing this baby all day.

                            • Anonymous

This thing is a lot like the Dark Souls 1 Zweihander in a way, in that despite being usually the first Ultra Greatsword you get in the game (unless you farm Old Knights or you're lucky enough to have them drop their Greatsword randomly, but the Old Knight Ultra Greatsword is vastly inferior to this weapon) it's also one of the best ones in the game, particularly for a strength build, it has a fantastic and very versatile moveset, having long-ranged vertical swings for it's 2-handed r1s that are great against single targets and the backswing can hit enemies behind you, it has a poke roll attack that is kind of hard to land until you get used to aiming it but it is very effective against enemies that are weak to thrust damage and has long reach and although it is a little delayed, it can be useful for rollcatching players who dodge too early, and it has a slow but powerful golf swing heavy attack for it's 2-hand heavy attacks and running attack that can send enemies flying and although the first heavy attack is very slow the follow-up swing is MUCH faster and does just as much damage while still sending a lot of enemies flying when it hits them, it has massive sweeping horizontal swings and rolling attacks when 1-handed that absolutely tears through crowds of enemies and a vertical swing for the 1-hand heavy attack which is good if you need reach (the follow-up is kinda finicky to land though and misses a lot in my experience), it is very long meaning it has excellent reach, it has high base damage as well as high strength scaling meaning it has excellent damage even at base stats and only gets even more powerful as you upgrade it, granted it's arguably not as crazy good as the Dark Souls 1 Zweihander since this sword is also really heavy unlike the Ds1 Zwei which was very light for a weapon of its power and it was very easy to get right off the bat once you're out of the Undead Asylum, while also having a heavy attack that was surprisingly fast and spammable for how powerful it is and did such ridiculous poise damage it could stunlock almost everything in the game, although it did get outscaled by other Ultra Greatswords in terms of raw damage and scaling, it was way WAY lighter and had a vastly superior moveset for the most part, as well as still being one of the deadliest weapons in the game in terms of raw damage as well as being able to stunlock almost everything in the game, But anyways, this weapon definitely is one of the best Ultra Greatswords in Dark Souls 2 despite being usually the first one you get and having relatively average requirements for a weapon of its power, the only majorly bad thing about it is that it's very heavy and like other "Ultra Weapons" in Dark Souls 2 it's a rather unwieldy until you get used to aiming it manually.

There's few things more satisfying than killing an enemy when they try to roll behind you, but get rollcaught by the backswing of the Two-handed R1s

What I like about this version in comparison to the Ds3 and ER versions is that the blade is chipped and worn, indicating that it’s seen it’s fare share of ware fare before we pick it up

No matter how strong you are... How do you swing something that weighs more than you do? ASIANS AND THEIR OBSESSION WITH BIG THINGS! IT'S MURDERING MY OCD! AAAAAAAAAAH

Shocked to find out that despite being one of the most (and with a huge emphasis on quotes here) "NORMAL" Ultra Greatswords, it's one of the longest if not the longest, Like seriously after using this sword for the longest time, all the other ones seem stumpy and tiny by comparison, especially compared to really stumpy ones like the Crypt Blacksword

                                      • Anonymous

I keep trying out different weapons to see how i like them but... I just can't stop coming back to this thing, It's too perfect to resist, Greatsword my beloved

                                        • Anonymous

Honestly infinitely better than the Elden Ring version imo, the moveset is infinitely better, it does way better damage,it can send dudes flying with its 2-handed R2s and running 2-handed R1s, the moveset is way better with long reaching vertical swings when 2-handed that can hit enemies behind you with the backswing while having huge sweeping swings when 1-handed that are excellent for crowd control and can easily take out multiple enemies at once, unlike the Elden Ring one which is stuck with mostly just clumsy horizontal swings and pretty much useless heavy attacks the only real good moves it has being crouch pokes and jumping R2s, hell I think the Elden Ring one is actually slower ontop of doing less damage, not to mention the Elden Ring one feels way less satisfying to use and feels less like you have superhuman strength and more like you are struggling to even use the thing

                                          • Anonymous

This sword is my baby, great damage, great reach being one of the longest, if not the longest ugs, buffable to improve it's already excellent damage even more, scales extremely well, versatile moveset, 1 handed being great for groups of trash mobs with massive sweeping light attacks, 2 handed great for bosses and single tough targets the second light attack can hit enemies behind you with the backswing, and the 2 handed golf swing heavy attack and running attack can yeet enemies off of ledges to their deaths if you time it right, and it's speed is not too slow for how damaging it is, and can easily stunlock alot of mobs, and backstabs/ripostes deal immense damage

The only bad part about it is that the immense weight does mean you have to build around it, and it's unwieldy until you get used to manually aiming it's swings without needing to rely on lock-on.

                                            • Anonymous

That thing was too big to be called a sword.
Too big, too thick, too heavy, and too rough, it was more like a large hunk of iron.

                                              • Anonymous

Replaying DS2 right now and I forgot how absolutely horrible the lock on mechanic with UGS is in this game. If I'm locking on then I want my character to obviously track towards the target, otherwise I wouldn't have locked on in the first place! Fortunately there's 2 ways to circumvent this: 1. You have to pull your left stick up each time before you attack since that makes your characters start walking towards the target and that makes your weapon track properly. 2. Get 28 strength and use it one handed for those wide sweep light attacks. Thank god that DS3 has this mechanic as a toggleable option.

                                                • Anonymous

I love this thing. You can 2 hand it with low str and it's powerful. You can 1 hand it with relatively low (28) str and it gets better. You can upgrade it to +10 pretty early in the game, and the S scaling in Str means it does even more absurd damage at 40+ str. Apply flame weapon for fashion (and even more damage). Also has a longer reach than most (all?) other UGS. Picked this up early in the game and thought I'd replace it, but I can't seem to find anything better. It just lays waste to everything.

                                                  • Anonymous

Wow one of the forever fan favourite weapons that people love to use. I sure hope I wont miss every second attack with it because the lock on is horrible in this game haha. :)

                                                    • Anonymous

For a fun Fume Knight build, use this and the basic Short Sword until you can get to Brume Tower to fight Fume for his actual weapons. You’ll get the full moveset using this in your left hand, including the L2 heavy and running attacks.

I miss having useful movesets in your left hand, as Fromsoft decided to switch that for weapon arts (lame) after this game - which is a shame since you get so much more variety for your builds when you can do more than just a standing light attack with whatever is in your left hand. You’ll have sweeping slashes and quick right hand pokes with this build which is great fun for dealing with the different encounters you’ll come across on your playthrough and nuanced for PvP.

if you are gonna use this weapon, if you don't have a lot of vigor be ready to unequip some armor or use some weaker armor so i suggest to make bandit class it starts with vigor level 11 and 30 or 40 levels more and you'll be ready to play with this huge sword and the armor of a havel knight

                                                                    • Anonymous

It was too big to be called a sword: massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw iron.

                                                                      • Anonymous

This thing (and all manual aim biggy weapons) can get really out of hand if you rely on lock-on. Obviously you need to let the stick go to neutral in order to auto-track the enemy, but damn that auto-tracking is SUPER flaky, sometimes swinging in seemingly random directions without any input, which almost always leaves you open for backstabs (this isn't nearly as much of a problem in DS3, notably). Ultimately, it's better to just always manual aim and forego lock-on entirely, especially against enemies who move a lot and shift the camera, causing your aim to fly even further off the mark.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Absolutely disgusting weapon. By the time I naturally progressed to Earthen Peak, my R1s were doing ~750 damage and 1-shotting the green hammer fatties. Killing bosses in like 10 hits.

                                                                          • Anonymous
