Smelter Hammer is a weapon in Dark Souls 2.
Weapon wielded by the iron warriors that wander Brume Tower.
Appears to have once been an axe, but in this terribly melted state it is little more than a great lump that crushes its foes by virtue of its sheer weight.
Acquired From
- Uncommon/Rare drop from the Iron Warrior that wields the weapon itself (Also drops from the Iron Warrior using the bleed mace, such as outside the bonfire near Fume Knight). Encountered several times throughout the Crown of the Old Iron King DLC.
Hints and Tips:
- Upgraded with regular Titanite. Cannot be upgraded with Bleed.
- The Smelter Hammer is considerably slower in attacking than many other Great Hammers, while also extremely larger than all the other Great Hammers.
- Despite requiring 70 STR to wield one handed (35 for two handed), you can power stance the Smelter Hammer with 99 STR.
- In PVP, challenging to dodge without a high AGL value as the hit box is enormous.
- The two-handed parry animation is replaced with a spin attack where the player rotates completely around twice then hurls themselves as a missile; most of the damage comes from the missile part of the attack.
- The running attack, both one and two-handed are unique. A long-distance jump attack occurs instead of the normal Great Hammer swinging attack.
- The two-handed R1 attacks combo into the normal 2-handed R2 attack (Spin attack) on other Great Hammers (excluding Archdrake Mace).
- The two-handed R2 attacks combo with an initial overhead attack, followed by a reverse overhead attack that hits behind the player.
- Be aware that other players can begin a backstab while you're laying on the ground after using the special L2 attack, recommended to wear Jester's Top, Ironclad Armour and/or Gower's Ring of Protection to negate backstab critical damage.
- Can be disguised as offhand Fist Weapon if one has Illusory Rings or Hidden Weapon spell while carrying Caestus as main weapon.
- Rolling attack strikes both in front of you and behind you (more to the side that it's being held on) which is extremely useful to bait players coming out of a roll attempting to backstab.
- move-set is fairly unknown in the online community and most people I have seen who use it don't use it to its full potential making it a wonderful surprise weapon to players in pvp When used properly. (Quite a hindrance to players who are not skilled with slower weapons as its difficult to utilize)
- Great weapon in narrow spaces as durability is very high (so hitting walls is something you shouldn't care about) and difficult to avoid unless the enemy is good at dodging.
- The immense power of this weapon could easily 1-2 shot any opponent in pvp especially with a backstab. (Backstab animation is seemingly slower than most great hammers)
- 2 handed overhead attack will pancake nearly every enemy in game.
- 2 handed move set is much faster than single handed.
- The weapon is extremely large, and can take up good amount of screenspace making it hard to see.
Trivia:
- The Smelter Hammer is often called the "Chicken Drumstick" or "Chicken Wing" by its fans because of its similar appearance.
- Calculated by Reddit user CitronCactus to be 5 metric tons.
- Currently the highest strength requirement weapon in all the Souls games,

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has.

This absolute beauty of a Chicken Drumstick is the very definition of "Awesome but Impractical", It's absurdly heavy to the point that it's hard to even wear decently strong armour without significant Vitality investment, it absolutely DEVOURS stamina to the point that unless you have a crazy amount of endurance you'd be hard-pressed to do more than two attacks in a row without running out of stamina, it's quite slow even by Great Hammer standards when it comes to most of its attacks, and it's so ridiculously huge that it often blocks a good portion of your vision, but it's also one of the most powerful weapons in the game in terms of raw physical damage, the Giant Warrior Club being the only competing Great Hammer for pure damage (which is much shorter has mediocre durability and has an arguably inferior moveset while still being incredibly heavy even if it's not as much as the Smelter Hammer) being able to one-shot most mobs with the 2-handed R2s at 50 strength, and even tanky Havels won't be able to withstand many hits from it, its moveset is just a thing of beauty, particularly the brilliant goofy-ahh spin-to-win bellyflop L2 attack, and the running attacks are extremely good to the point you could argue they're OP in PvP, and sure it's slow but your enemies are DEFINITELY gonna feel it when they get hit by it, this thing makes a mockery of poise most of the time, you might as well be hitting people with an entire bus with how easily it can pancake people and send them flying through the air, even regular R1s with this weapon can pancake people and/or send them flying with ease, I'd recommend using items like the Cloranthy Ring (preferably the +2 variant if you have it) and the Blossom Kite Shield due to how insanely stamina-hungry this thing is, and like other big heavy weapons having a decently hefty amount of poise helps a lot too. Overall, sure it's impractical but it's also easily one of the most fun weapons in the game, I love this beautiful Colossal Drumstick so much.

I kinda wish this thing made the same sounds as the Dark Souls 1 Dragon Tooth/Great Club only louder and/or deeper, Swinging this giant burnt chicken drumstick would be even better if it made a really loud *CLOOONG!* every time it hit something
- Anonymous
My dumb ass got multiple of these trying to get the bleed version, without bothering to check if it was even possible
- Anonymous
A fantastic weapon for Horse**** Valley, since its two-handed heavy attack is one of the few things that can pancake those horrible Frost Horses who are also more susceptible to strike damage than other forms of physical damage, and it has possibly the highest durability of any weapon in the game that isn't unbreakable like the Santier's Spear after breaking the statue head off, which really helps against the two hell kitties Lud and Zallen with their really annoying ability of corroding your weapon and damaging its durability every time you hit them since it's nowhere near as likely to break halfway through the fight like most other weapons.

This thing is what colossal weapons in Elden Ring aspire to be.
Was doing DEX build, and once got to Brume Tower decided "If it drop in few attempts, doing respec for STR", and so it did

I never knew this was rare, just got it randomly recently and was like "wow that's strong". Still running it to the end, insanely good weapon for PvP and PvE.

will last so very long, 300 durability, r2 bonk for over 1k, at this point you should be stocked up on resins, i use dark resin and lightning, agaisnt armored targets can easily hit for 1500, 2shot the ruin sentinels in drangleic, 1 hit almost all trash enemies, take your time, kill evverything and be still at more than half durability, (also excelent agaisnt Sinh, same build and he was down in 9 -10 hits

I got this simply by completing the DLC without any farming gear. I was super lucky or maybe I used up all my luck on this and soon death will come for me at some dubious and shady place, ruining my whole life in a single instant forever.

I'm currently working on my personal 100% run. You know, farm every gear/weapon, be able to use everything be it spells, miracles and weapons. After getting this thing while farming the Minotaur Head, I didn't realised I had to level up strength anymore... Welp... Time to farm the Giant Lord another 10 times I guess. I'm interested in seeing this thing with power stance but we'll see.

The running R1 is literally the most overpowered move in the game. Not only is it nearly impossible to dodge, but it also catches runners, and pancakes damage traders. All of the attacks on this weapon will fling the other person out of their attacks. Ultimate poise destroyer. Just sprint/backstep and R1 for an easy Host Destroyed.
- Anonymous
as i saw the strenght requirements & weight my first thought was: i'm gonna powerstance two of those babys :D
I love that Goofy-ahh L2 attack, there's few things that give me more joy than watching my character turn into a beyblade spinning around this gigantic burnt chicken leg before proceeding to recklessly and clumsily bellyflop into enemies and faceplanting while sending enemies flying like wet towels, it's pretty much guaranteed to use all of your stamina and it's impractical, but I don't care, it's goofy as all hell and I adore it
