Great Hammers in Dark Souls II are a type of Weapon that's considered among the largest weapon types in the game. All Great Hammers deal Strike damage, and since they're larger than normal weapons, their attacks are extremely slow, but very powerful. Similar to Hammers, landing a hit with Great Hammers can easily stagger opponents. They are also best wielded with both hands, as they have a high Strength requirement. Just like Hammers, the first strike is the most important, the starting and ending animation of its attacks can confuse opponents, best used for defensive and turtling enemies. This page covers a list of all Great Hammers in Dark Souls 2.

I love how there's arguably more Great Hammers that are just huge sticks, giant bones, dragon teeth, or boulders tied to branches and Anvils-On-Sticks than there are real hammers/maces

Even if they aren't gonna be your main weapon, having a Great Hammer around as a backup is very useful, as they're not only incredibly effective, best of all, they're fantastic for making pancakes out of most enemies, there are many enemies that are trivialized by using a Great Hammer and just mashing R2, there are many enemies that are normally hard to stagger/knock over that can be flattened over and over without even getting the chance to recover and attack you back by spamming R2 with a Great Hammer, normally scary enemies that normally can't be knocked over and/or easily staggered like Heide Knights or the Horse**** Valley Frost Horses can be easily stunlocked by being pancaked over and over by Great Hammer R2s, Heide Knights go from being an unpredictable and deadly enemy that you should be careful with, to you just being able to straight-up bully them with a Great Hammer, Not to mention there's a good few Great Hammers with fairly modest requirements if 2-handed and reasonable weight for their weapon class, so they aren't unusable if you're not a Strength Build with high equip load or anything like that so even lighter builds like Dex/Mage builds could make use of a few of them.

I love how every great mace is like a piece of skull, a shell, literal dragon tooth or rotting tree trunk.

Aka humanoid enemy cheeser or the big fck you to every npc red phantom
The weapon.

Old knight hammer is the best. You can farm it right away, only needs 15 strength, no scaling, so make it raw, huge poise damage, pancake R2. Only downside os its durability, so bring an estoc or something

These are too good. Almost all enemies are either weak against strike or easy to stagger/pancake, and this weapon type does both. The range is typically not as good as a UGS but you're gonna be murdering everything in a level with this anyway
The two-handed strong attack for this weapon class is excellent for making pancakes out of NPCs. I always add at least one great hammer to my arsenal even on Dex characters for this very reason.
