Blue Flame is a weapon in Dark Souls 2.
Straight sword wielded by Leydia apostles.
Imbued with a special magic that makes the Blue Flame both a sword and magic catalyst. Execute a strong attack to emit magic.
The Leydia apostles, adept at magic, wielded unique weapons but were hunted down as traitors.
Acquired From
- Random drop from Leydia Pyromancers in the Undead Crypt.
- Potential drop from dual-wielding red phantom in Brightstone Cove Tseldora after burning Bonfire Ascetic.
Hints and Tips:
- Upgrade with Twinkling Titanite to +5
- Its Strong Attack will cast sorceries with 100 cast speed (Clear Bluestone Ring does affect Blue Flame's casting speed), making it a versatile option for Int builds. However, it cannot cast Hexes, only sorceries.
- Unlike catalysts, Blue Flame can be buffed with resins and sorcery powers increased with Magic Weapon, Great Magic Weapon and Crystal Magic Weapon
- Spell-based buffs increase the elemental damage on a weapon by a percentage of that elemental damage already present on the weapon... Catalysts (staffs, chimes, pyro-flames) have no affect on the potency of spell-based buffs.
- example: Blue flame +5 (disregarding scaling for a moment) has 163 base magic damage. Crystal Magic Weapon is applied like so: (163 x 1.3) + 50 = 211.9 + 50 = 261.9 =~ 262 magic damage.
- Buffing Blue Flame also seem to benefit the spell damage as well and equipping Ring of Blades. Also Aromatic Ooze outperforms Crystal Magic Weapon significantly, so much that you would need more than 50 int for Magic Blue Flame to do better damage.
- Infused with "Raw", Blue Flame is capable of doing very high spell damage - even at 12 intelligence - making it possible to use spiced down, very damaging spells, with almost no relevant stats.
- Infusing with "Magic" will benefit any wielder with 68 Intelligence or above; this, combined with the ability to cast Soul Spear at a low height (allowing for point blank casting), makes it a deadly weapon for a high INT built caster. .
- If looking for a dual wield build with sorceries Blue Flame is an excellent choice (be sure to wield Blue flame in the right hand, as the Power stance overrides the Sorcery casting).
- At least one blue flame must be equipped in order to have two weapons equipped with the same sorcery-based buff at the same time (either use two blue flames or use a staff to buff the blue flame and then switch to a weapon and buff it with the blue flame)
- Once in power-stance, the left handed strong attack will function as it would with regular straight swords. The regular right hand Strong Attack will remain able to cast spells.
- The Blue Flame's cast source is from the grip, not the blade, making the casting height similar to a chime.
- If paired with Hidden Weapon or Illusory Rings, one can create an illusion as if one is able to cast spells with his/her bare hands, a very useful trick for catching PvP foes off guard..

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has.

Dual wielded these and crystal buffed both of them, most fun I've had in ds2

It's really weird that use a catalyst to buff this sword and them cast magic with it does more damage than cast with the catalyst itself

What farming method would you suggest? early moonlight gs + farm blue flame from the red guy or wait until undead crypt?

The 110 (10% extra) damage stat when you hit someone mid animation applies for spells as well cast from blue flame.

Anyone knows about bleed and the effectiveness of sourceri casting.
In game the scaling >BB< of magic infusion.
I have 64 int
Dmg is the same but + the bleeding dmg.

Going to do a NG+ no bonfire run with this weapon, the disc chime, the old iron king’s crown, the repair sorcery, and heal. Wish me luck.

Mediocre as a catalyst compared to Staff of Wisdom (about 25% less damage on spells,) but great as a magic damage straight sword for Int builds. You'd be better off in most scenarios with a dedicated catalyst and melee weapon but if you're tight on equip load or don't use offensive spells too much it's a good compromise.

Which bonfire do i use an ascetic on in brightstone to get the NPC invader who can potentially drop a blue flame ?.
This weapon has an amazing true combo, OP for Int ir hexes build. This video shows how to do it. Amazing... https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ

So leydias can cast pyromancies with it but we can't? nice clickbait From

Thinking of doing a Spellsword build with this weapon, but I want to make it effective at melee and spells. Should I keep it un-infused and slap Aromatic Ooze on it, while having about say 53 int (enough Int to use Crystal Soul Spear). Aromatic Ooze can be farmed from the dog-like enemies in The Gutter btw.

Actually, I did a bit more testing and it seems like most smaller weapons and a few larger weapons allow you to do a normal straight sword attack right after them. Some spears and the Chariot Lance don't work. It works with any attacks these weapons do.
- Anonymous
Actually, it seems your roll attack just needs to be fast enough.
- Anonymous
Not sure if anyone else found this, but at least is SoFS if you R1 immediately after stabbing from a roll with the weapon in your other hand your first slash is a regular straight sword slash.

Does infusing Blue Flame with Magic effect the power of sorceries cast?

This weapon is one of the many reasons why DS2 is my favourite Souls. A great compromise between melee and magic. Looks good and the moveset is fine.

Gandalf's sword, Glamdring, was described as being "bright as blue flame" as it slew enemies.

Such a shame this weapon didn’t crossover to DS3. Instead we get an ugly tooth pick like weapon dropped by a red phantom with odd hat fetishes.

bad thing is you can't have it early game. still effective from onwards. i wonder if it's useful in ng+

I'm just leaving this here for anyone who's planning to use this weapon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_xLqw2f1YqQ
NOTE: I didn't make the video. If the maker sees this I just want to say you did awesome job with it.

One of the Loyce Knights is using it to cast soul spear and other spells in the Ivory King Bossfight.

Mine both dropped from the dual scimitar skeletons in the room full of headstones in undead crypt
Right now I want to do a build with 50 int 50 faith where I power stance the Heide knight with the blue flame but I don't know how to farm for it and I don't want to basically beat the entire game just to farm for it
