Katanas in Dark Souls II are a Weapon type that's considered as an all-around balanced weapon. It has a good combination both slash and thrust attacks which all Katanas share in common. They can also be used effectively at all ranges. Katanas are also capable of inflicting Bleed damage to opponents with successive attacks, making each strike deadly. When Katanas are equipped in the offhand, they have the ability to Parry. It makes this weapon effective when dual-wielded since you can do Bleed damage with each successive strike, trimming down your opponent's health, and can be used to parry to take advantage of your counterattack. It took me 4 years of owning the game on multiple platforms to notice katanas have insane counter damage. I thought you PvP guys were just edgy, but no these things are awesome

To this day, I still don't understand why katanas have such low durability and modest/high weight in the Dark Souls games. I'm no weeb, but I'm pretty sure katanas were moderately lightweight and sharp, not heavy and flimsy.
