Standard Shields | Strike / Parry | ||
Enchantable: Yes/No |
No Special |
Watchdragon Parma is a Standard Shield in Dark Souls 2.
"A shield decorated by intertwined dragons.
The black and white contrast depicts the
ebb and flow of the fate of all things living.
and the serpentine dragons that watch over
the march of time.
The bearer of this shield will be blessed
by great fortune in battle."
Standard Shields can be used not only to block an enemy but to parry their attack as well. This allows a riposte, a free attack by the player for a high amount of damage. Enemy attacks can be interrupted with a parry (pressing the Strong Attack button for the shield) and requires practice to learn the timing.
Acquired From:
- Found in Dragon Shrine, after defeating Dragonfang Villard, it will be in a chest to the right of the Petrified Egg.
- Acquired after killing the Dragon in Heide's Tower of Flame (SotFS).
Hints and Tips:
- A balanced shield with moderate physical, magic and fire defense.
- Low strength requirement, and no dexterity requirement, making it useful for pure strength build.
- Increases item discovery calculation by 50 points in addition to base 150 when equipped (after patch 1.10).
Notes:
- This is one of the selected by From and Namco Bandai.
- The design on the shield represents Darkstalker Kaathe and Kingseeker Frampt.
- Reinforced with normal Titanite.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has.

What on earth does this mean:
"This is one of the selected by From and Namco Bandai."
Why is this Wiki such a mess compared to DS1/3 and ER?
- Anonymous
Do I have to keep it "visible" for the extra drop chance to work or I can just equip it and keep something else on my left hand?
Used it all throughout Ng since it's a pretty good at everything and you also get extra item drops to boot. Will probably switch to a different shield in Ng+ tho cause I already got all the items I wanted and now extra stuff will just be clutter.

This is an unusually good shield that is underrated and deserves more attention. +10 is good!
- Anonymous
The Drakekeeper and Defender shields are better statistically, but both are heavier, end-game shields without item discovery boost.
For those reasons, I'm gonna say this beauty is the best of all medium shields. Looks damn pretty, too.

Question- If you cast homing soul mass then equip 2 of these parmas, will the item discovery rate increase of BOTH Parmas be applied when you kill an enemy?
- Anonymous
This shield also increases the frequency of the engraved gauntlets special effect. Have tested multiple times, and definitely get more critical hits when I'm using the watchdragon Parma and the engraved gauntlets vs just using the gauntlets themselves.

I just beat the dragon and some heide knight knocked me off the ledge before i could grab the shield. I guess i have to wait till ng+

This thing is crazy. Can carry you from Sl~15 after somehow killing the wyvern and it'll take you to, in my experience, at least Sl150+ through all DLCs

This is my favorite shield so far at SL160. 90% physical is pretty good. The high well-rounded elemental defenses are worth it. The item discovery is great, your drop rates in practice will be almost as good as Jester's Hat + Watchdragon Parma + Rusted Coin. Let's say normal drop is ~20% kills of a specific enemy, I would get ~35% with this shield, and ~45% with stacking item discovery items.
You can get this pretty early in the game in SOTFS, just get to Heide's Tower of Flame straight from Pursuer fight, struggle a bit with the knights (use a strike weapon like ~Mace+5), lure the big-a$$ dragon closer to the middle of the platform and kill with a bow from down the stairs. Dragon can be poisoned if you're impatient. There ya go use this awesome shield for the other half of the game and upgrade it primarily for more shield poise and physical defense.

DO NOT SNIPE the red dragon when he is standing on the ledge
down him to a last shot, let him do an attack, he goes back to the middle
then shoot him the last time
Does anyone know if the item drop increase works when the shield is on your back (i.e. when using a bow or two handing a weapon)?
- Anonymous
Is there a way to confirm that this does, in fact, increase item drop? Or is that just flavor text?
- Anonymous
I expected it to be really statistically bad given its purpose as a loot item, but it's probably one of the best rounded medium shields. Perfect for playing semi-defensive without relying on turtling
- Anonymous
This shield was damn amazing for my mage, i dont even care that it doesn't reduce %100 physical damage, it has worked wonders for me
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I didn't received it from the chest, I don't have it in the inventory...wtf... Did anyone else got it from the chest?
- Anonymous
Sniping at the dragon made the shield drop into the ocean for me, and it doesn't show up in the Dragon Shrine chest in SotFS.
- Anonymous
But does the item discorvery stack with, say, another parma shield?
- Anonymous
this shields infusions are broken. though i love it... does From still update the game?
- Anonymous
Great for both fashion souls to have on your back with a big 2 hander eg. Dragons tooth, while also making enemies drop items more often. This buff will appear as a symbol below the stamina bar
- Anonymous
Probably one of the best medium shields, good overall protection stats against most forms of damage and status effects and the stability is not bad at all and pretty good provided you don't rely on blocking everything too much (although that applies to literally every single shield in the game), and it has a pretty decent parry too, it's not heavy at all with very reasonable weight and it provides a nice item discovery buff while you have it equipped making it suitable for both people who like actively using shields and people who two-hand big weapons most of the time and don't use blocks that much and even if you don't use the shield itself at all it's a good item/armor/weapon drop farming tool, and it's also very fashionable-looking too, overall one of my favorite shields in the game
