Standard Shields | Strike / Parry | ||
Enchantable: Yes/No |
No Special |
Black Dragon Shield is a Standard Shield in Dark Souls 2. Standard Shields can be used not only to block an enemy but to parry their attack as well. This allows a riposte, a free attack by the player for a high amount of damage. Enemy attacks can be interrupted with a parry (pressing the Strong Attack button for the shield) and requires practice to learn the timing.
In-game description:
A shield that appears in ancient legends. Strangely shaped, and said to be crafted from the talons of the black dragon.
The legend of the pale dragon is told in various locales, but each account is fragmentary. Very rarely is the black dragon mentioned, and some say that it is merely an embellishment adopted in later retellings of the story.
Acquired From
- Can be dropped from the Dragon Knights on the stairs leading up to the ancient dragon.
Hints and Tips:
- Drakekeeper's Shield offer better defenses, damage, scaling and stability for only 0.5 more weight. The Drakekeeper's Shield also upgrades with titanite, rather than expensive petrified dragon bones.
- Requires petrified dragon bones to upgrade.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.

Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit

Good looking, 51 stability, 100% DEF and pretty light. Who upgrades shields anyway?
- Anonymous
Who cares about all this? You wear it for the cosplay, it just happens to be a perfectly viable shield too. No need to go all meta and post about the drakekeeper's shield...

Lowest STR requirement 100% physical DEF shield. Why is all the information here about the Drakekeeper's Shield?
This is the item description:
"A shield that appears in ancient legends. Strangely shaped, and said to be crafted from the talons of the black dragon."
"The legend of the pale dragon is told in various locales, but each account is fragmentary. Very rarely is the black dragon mentioned, and some say that it is merely an embellishment adopted in later retellings of the story."
