Standard Shields | Strike / Parry | ||
Enchantable: Yes/No |
No Special |
Defender's Shield is a Standard Shield in Dark Souls 2. Standard Shields can be used not only to block an enemy but to parry their attack as well. This allows a riposte, a free attack by the player for a high amount of damage. Enemy attacks can be interrupted with a parry (pressing the Strong Attack button for the shield) and requires practice to learn the timing.
Acquired From
- Trade Throne Defender Soul to Ornifex
Hints and Tips:
- One of the best Medium Shields in the game, it has high stability and 100% physical block along with good elemental defenses. However, it can only be acquired around the very end of the game.

Parameter Bonus: Strength, Dexterity,Magic, Fire, Lightning and Dark bonuses - The scaling multiplier applied to the [Attack: stat]. Scaling quality is from highest to lowest as follows: S/A/B/C/D/E.
The higher the player's [Str, Dex, Mag, Fire, Light] stat, the higher the [Attack Bonus: Stat] is (found on the player status screen). The higher the scaling letter, the higher the percent multiplier applied to the [Attack: Stat].
This resulting bonus damage is added to the base physical damage of the weapon and is shown in the equipment screen in blue numbers as a "+ X".
Durability: The weapon's HP, when the durability hits 0, the effectiveness of its attacks become weakened to the point of almost uselessness. When an items durability is low, a message will come up saying "Weapon At Risk!" at this point the weapon does not perform at it's best.
Weight: How much the item weights when equipped.
Stability: How well the player keeps stance after being hit
Attack Type: Defines what kind of swing set the weapon has.

Honestly, one of the best and easily the most flexible shield in the game. Can be used on basically any build, can parry, has really good stability and excellent absorption stats. Maybe not the best for super tanky builds that would probably prefer Havel, but I'd assume it optimal for anything else.
What a beautiful shield. Its a little bit dark so you most likely wont see the patterns at all times but other than that, its very, very usable. If you like shields and are looking for a good shield, this might be a answer. Sure, there might exist lighter shields with similar properties but If you want an easy Game, then you may want to play another game :)
9/10, very good and good looking shield

This shield can be obtained before the end of the game. You can fight the defenders as soon as you are in drangleic castle and open the fight with the kings ring. Nashandra and aldia won't be unlocked after but it's still a valid point if you want the shield earlier.

No comments here before mine? Wow. Well here I am. Not a bad shield but a pitch black shield is not really my style. I prefer shiny metal shields like the Drangleic Shield. Just my two cents on this shield.
If you dont want to use rare bones or pick the sword for fth build just use stone parma. Its almost same def/stability/weight and only looses elemental defences, but its not a boss weapon tho
