Mild Mannered Pate is an NPC in Dark Souls 2
Mild Mannered Pate Information
- If you exhaust his dialogue after triggering his trap, he will give you the White Sign Soapstone
- If you kill him, you can come back and revive him for 2000 souls. (Sometime a couple of hours need to pass in-game before the grave appears)
Encounters
Forest of Fallen Giants. Pate can be found sitting next to a gate that locks when passing through it. He will mention to you that he was with another traveler previously who became locked in a similar contraption. He will warn you of the danger and will continue to tell you that he still has the ring from the unfortunate traveler who became trapped. After escaping from the trap or coming back after dying, talk to Pate again. When you exhaust his dialogue, he will give you the White Sign Soapstone. Pate can be summoned as a White Phantom for The Last Giant boss fight.
Earthen Peak. From the second bonfire, proceed upstairs and then up the ladder. Head right towards the room with the fan blade and Desert Sorceresses on the other side, then drop down, and look for a room off that hallway with lots of vases. He will be leaning on the wall in this room below the stairs. You need to talk to him again after you found the treasure (jumping passage along the way) for him to move on.
Brightstone Cove Tseldora. Right before the Chapel Threshold bonfire to your left, there is a cliffside you can descend off of to land infront of a house below. You will find Pate and Creighton the Wanderer fighting inside.

Dialogue
- When first met in Forest of Fallent Giants before going into the trap
- Hello there. Travelling all alone in these treacherous times?
Well, I hope you have a very good reason.
Oh, hogwash, who am I to judge? Hah…
My name is Pate.
I journey hither and thither…On a sort of… …treasure hunt, you might call it.
Be careful out there. There's talk of unsavoury bandits who prey upon travellers like yourself. - Oh yes, you be cautious if you go any farther.
There's treasure in there, for certain, but the entrance locks from behind.
I saw the same design earlier, and it's the same contraption, I'm sure.
I was with this warrior, you see, and he insisted that he go inside first.
The rather brusque fellow tried to swipe the loot for himself, but it trapped him inside.
I still have the gent's ring. I do hope he wasn't harmed. - I'll leave this one to you. I'm worried about what might be inside.
- When talking after going through the trap in Forest of Fallent Giants
- Well, I see you managed to escape.
I hope that brave warrior didn't come a cropper either.
Be careful out there. There's talk of unsavoury bandits who prey upon travellers like yourself. - Oh, but you should take this.
It allows Undead to call out for help to one another, across the fissures between worlds.
With luck, somebody will lend you a hand.
- When talking after going through the trap in Forest of Fallent Giants, if you didn't talk to him first
- I wanted to warn you of the trap down the way, but you walked right past me.
My name is Pate.
I journey hither and thither…On a sort of… …treasure hunt, you might call it.
Be careful out there. There's talk of unsavoury bandits who prey upon travellers like yourself. - Good to see you safe.
- When met in Earthen Peak
Well, we meet again.
There's treasure this way… But I've a bad feeling about it.
I don't quite have the guts myself! Hah hah…
- When talking after getting the treasure in Earthen Peak
- Well, good to see that you survived.
Perhaps you're more rugged than I thought.
In any case, the treasure is yours. Since you went ahead, and took the leap. - I prefer a more cautious approach. It's hard to know who to even trust these days.
For instance, I've heard that a man is out for my life.
Now, what misunderstanding could have ever led to that?
The poor bloke must have quite an imagination. Heh… - You be careful, too, my friend. For trust can be a dangerous thing.
- When encountered fighting Creighton in Brighstone Cove Tseldora
He swung at me! Please, lend me a hand!
- When talking after helping him kill Creighton
- What misunderstanding could have caused this?
Well. Thank you. I owe you my life.
My little pied-à-terre lies beyond here.
You'll find some of my treasures there. Help yourself to those that suit you.
Here, use this key. - Be cautious on your travels.
- When talking after he kills Creighton without player help
What was he thinking?
I haven't done a thing.
- When the player opens the trapped chest in Brightstone Cove Tseldora
Ooh, that'll leave a nice scar!
- When giving equipment to the player
We went through a lot together. Take these, as a token of our friendship.
Don't be shy, they were meant for you…Heh heh…
- When attacked but not aggroed
Eek!
(or)
What the devil's…!
(or)
Now, stop that!
- When attacked and aggroed
Oh, I can scrimmage, my friend.
- When killing the player
Heh heh heh…
- When re-encountered after aggroing
You again? Oh, heavens…
- When attacked and health is under 50%
Not too shabby…Heh heh…
- When killed
(death scream; no subtitles)
Trivia
- Voiced by Peter Serafinowicz, who also voiced Darth Maul in the Phantom Menace. He also provided death sounds for male player characters.

Pate caconically dying on ds2 near the spider area and then patches appearing in the next souls game, bloodborne, as a spider.

You can get Pate to give you his gear in Earthen Peak without actually summoning him for the Last Giant boss (but you only have a short time after you kill the boss?). After the Last Giant boss is killed, Pate sign will still be there. Summon him and for some reason the boss' fog gate comes back which you can enter, but no boss will be there and Pate will leave which was enough to give me his gear in the end.

How do I open the area past him (the trap) after it is closed?

I've almost finished the game without talking to Pate again at earthern peak and was afraid that I won't be able to finish their quest, but when I returned he still was there.

Hmm… I dunno. This guy is basically a coward and hopes that by giving you his gear that Creighton will kill you instead of him, but he still never attacks you first. He’s smart enough not to trust anyone and not to make enemies when doing do. Sensible bloke, really.

kill pate, then kill this guy after he gives you free stuff. they're both murdering *******s and the world would be better without them, win win situation

After I killed this guy in over the other I quickly went to Cromwell to absolve anything, he said I have sin but the fee for it was 0 souls

The amount of happy souls refrences in the comments fill me with joy.

Pate refers to the head, you know who has a shiny bald head? Patches.

I'm your friend, maybe... Maybe not. Dude this guy is giving off bad vibe, I think we should kill him. But he gave us a soapstone, Solaire gave us a soapstone, so this guy is the new Solaire.

Pate? More like Snake
Atleast he isn't as bad as Petrus from DS1

The fact he freely gives us his armor and ring while telling us “I've heard that a man is out for my life. Now, what misunderstanding could have ever led to that? The poor bloke must have quite an imagination. Heh…“ is basically him hoping Creighton mistakes us for him, and murders us instead, using the ring as proof he got the right guy. DECEIT!

He's not exactly like Patches in that he warns you that going for the treasure might be dangerous.

So there's no additional notes on what he gives you on this page. Just the White Sign and what he drops on death. After I killed him, I actually bothered to read his full script, only to notice he gives you more stuff in his questline. Can someone inform me of what else he gives?

For those that can't find Creighton on his last phase of the questline.
in SOTFS he's not placed at the entranced of the fog forest but instead on top of the ruined tower before the Najka bossfight.

I have a theory. We know the feud between Pate and Creighton is ambiguous, but what about the feud between him and the player?
My theory is that Pate tries to trap and punish criminals. This is why his ongoing feud is with Creighton, a deserter thug. I believe Pate thinks you're suspicious and keeps trying to kill you because of that.
Think about it, some random guy who probably looks like a zombie comes into the forest of fallen giants and just kills everything he sees, you're obviously fighting in self defence but you're still about as suspicious as Creighton.
He's always very surprised when you survive, but he never loses his chill, so you, the supposed criminal don't kill him.

I did his encounter in the forest then found him next at earthen peak, spoke to him and he gave me all his stuff?
I talked to him again and he said the expected line about treasure and all that.
Really weird!
- Anonymous
So I killed Creighton and took the key from Pate. Looted the treasure room and got trapped as well as mocked by Pate. Came back to his house for retribution but he wasn't there anymore.
Is there anyway to track him down and murder his ass after this?
- Anonymous
He looks like the Warrior starting class from the first dark souls. That same class disappointed me in Dark souls 2 with a broken sword and small shield.

Peter Serafinowicz who voices him is a brilliant comedian who is in the legendary Look Around You BBC show.

SOTFS - getting the earthen peak treasure before talking to pate breaks the questline. He disappears and you can't talk to him, nor can you find him in Tseldora
- Anonymous
If killed after the encounter with Creighton (which i recommend you should) you can buy his gear from Melentia.
- Anonymous
Is there any way to still get his whole set if I never summoned him to the last giant boss fight? If I kill him and take it would that interfere with me being able to attain Creighton's set?
- Anonymous
Aha, Peter Serafinowicz. I thought it was the voice of Matt Berry. "Father...!"

Why are people saying Pate is an enemy? He tells you about the traps, and is honest about Creighton... who actually tries to trap and kill him after going all gung ho and getting himself trapped. Creighton is a murderous bastard looking to kill things... in fact if you read his axe, its not his, meaning he stole it from Shieldless Lothian. Now read the axes description in DS3 and tell me creighton is not the bad guy... Yall just biased against a guy with a spear and greatshield after Patches.

This guy is giving off a really bad vibe, so I think we should kill him.

If I didn't talk to him at earthen peak and already am at tseldora, can I still find him at earthen peak???

If Patches, Pate, and Mauldron have taught me anything about Souls, it's to never trust a guy with a spear and greatshield.

I will never get over the fact that Pate was voiced by Darth Maul. They could have given him the Twinblades and REALLY hit us on the nose.

Reference to Patches. Spear + Shield + Secretly an asshole + Tricks you by saying "oh there's treasure in there" + Acts innocent.

Do I have to summon him at the forrest if I want to find him later?
- Anonymous
Seems like this might be bugged in SotFS if you get the treasure he’s talking about before you talk to him then he won’t allow you to complete his dialog. I’m on PC if that matters.
- Anonymous
why is this all on Spanish? Like it'd be fine if this wiki was for the dedicated to Spanish but uh... it's not.

I exhausted both Creighton's and Pate's dialogue, and in earthen peak, Pate gave me his whole armor set. When i go to the house in Brighstone, they're not there. Since i have Pate's armor, i wanted to kill Creighton and get his armor. I don't know why they aren't at Brightstone.
- Anonymous
I killed him for his spear in forest of fallen giants, but I didnt obtain any sin. is this a bug or a feature? cant find any information online.

Guess this would count as Trivia but he's wearing the Standard Set from Dark Souls 1 and 3.
- Anonymous
My theory on this is that Patches is an unmentioned entity in DS2, and Pate bears a striking resemblance to him. Patches probably tricked Creighton (in the way he always does) and ended up laying the blame on Pate, as Pate doesn't seem to have any idea who Creighton is. Patches would go on to do something similar in DS3, wearing someone else's armor to fool the player into trusting him.

His name might be a reference to Apate, an evil spirit of deceit released from Pandora's Box.

Maybe you should add 'if you don't get the treasure that Pate mention in the Earthen Peak, opening the door beside him and just open the dat chest, then you cant exhaust his dialogue ', well, at least that was what happened to me...
- Anonymous
if pate dies but you summon him again and kill the boss does it count?

Pate… pat…. PATCHES?
