Benhart of Jugo Information in Dark Souls 2

  • NPC holding a BlueMoon Greatsword (Not to be confused with the real Moonlight Greatsword) in the path between Majula and the Shaded Woods. When you rescue Rosabeth of Melfia, he will thank you and become available for summons.
  • Teaches you the gesture Joy
  • Proud of his sword, a family heirloom, Benhart is convinced it has a powerful magic only a true swordsman can unlock. Unfortunately, it is a fake. Maughlin the Armourer will confirm this if you take the blade to him.
    • Regrettably, there is no additional dialogue or acknowledgment from Benhart if the player talks to him with the true Moonlight Greatsword.
  • Upon slaying Benhart, Merchant Hag Melentia will sell his armor.
  • If you summon Benhart for at least 3 of the boss fights that he can be summoned for, and he stays alive until the boss is defeated, afterwards while speaking to him in the Memory of Orro will award you with the following:
    • Moonlight Greatsword achievement
    • Bluemoon Greatsword
    • Benhart's Parma
    • Benhart's Set.
      • Note: The bosses do not have to be different ones, as a Bonfire Ascetic can be used to respawn the same boss repeatedly.
      • Note that none of the final bosses in Throne of Want will count towards Benhart's questline/trophy, even though he can be summoned for them.

  1. Bluemoon Greatsword

Benhart of Jugo Dialogue

- When first encountered in the entrance to Shaded Woods

  1. Have you business with me?
The way yonder's all blocked up you see. By this god-awful statue.
Heavens above. Who thought it a good idea to put it there!
  2. Ohhhh, I'm in quite the pickle now.
See that statue? Gives me the willies. Stare at it for long enough, it starts to look alive.
Ach, It just does nae seem quite right. There are no craftsmen round these parts.
Hey, you don't think a real-life person was turned to stone, do you?

- Talk after clearing the path to Shaded Woods

  1. What?! Clearing the way was your doing, was it?
Haah, didn't think you had it in yer pal.
No no no. That's not like it sounds, you know! It was a pleasant surprise, that's all.
Name's Benhart. Thanks to you, I can resume my journey.
If we share the same path, I'm sure that we are gonna meet again.
I'll repay my debt to you in battle. And I swear it by my sword.
The road ahead's gonna be long, but I'm here to help. Gah hah hah hah hah!
  2. I am in yer debt.
It's a true man who honours his debts. And I'll see mine paid.
I swear it, by my ancient sword.

- When first encountered in Drangleic Castle

  1. Ho! Well met, friend.
Good to see you well. Yes, hehh hehh, very good indeed.
  2. I journeyed from the distant east to perfect my swordsmanship.
Legend has it that powerful beings slumber in this land.
This sword, it's been in my family for generations. And only a real man can wield it true.
I may face any manner of man or beast, but none shall be a match for my sword. Heh heh heh heh…
  3. This land is a right mess, eh?
King's gone, and the people have a mad glint in their eyes.
The land itself is overrun by terrible beasts.
No better place to test my sword, ey? Heh heh heh heh…

- When first encountered in Forest of the Fallen Giants

  1. Well, we meet again! What you doing here?
Who'dve thought we'd meet in a place like this.
Fate just won't let us stay apart, will she? Gah hah hah hah hah hah!
  2. See the old sword's caught your attention? Well, you've a good eye, then.
Ah, it's been in my family for generations.
They say it is crafted with moonlight, and we all know what that means, it wards off evil.
And I would nae trade her for all the riches in the world.
They say that no man has ever teased oot the sword's true power.
But in the right hands…Heh heh heh heh heh heh…
  3. I see you've taken a liking to the sword. Well, I applaud you, for you've a sharp eye.
But this is one sword pal that I will nae be giving up.
If you still insist on having it…
Then you will have to pry it from my cold hands! Gah hah hah hah hah hah!
  4. I have a great debt to you. And I'll never forget it.
I, Benhart, swear by my honour, to aid you in your darkest hour! So nae problem pal.

- When first encountered in Memory of Orro

  1. Oh! Look at you! Old friend!
I see yer travels weigh upon you yet.
Just remember, I'm always ready to help.
  2. My homeland is in the far east. A kingdom of honourable fighting men.
And this sword yet awaits a true man to wield it.
I know how swords think, you see! Gah hah hah hah!

- When giving equipment to the player
We have outwitted death a good many times.
Huh huh, My dear friend, take these.

- When attacked but not aggroed
Ooph!
(or)
What in bloody…!
(or)
Enough with that!

 - When attacked and aggroed
Very well. I, Benhart, will be honoured to chop you to pieces.

- When killing the player
You knew this would happen…

- When re-encountered after aggroing
You're a sorry waste of life…

- When attacked and health is under 50%
Hey! How dare you!

- When killed
What's done…urgh… Is done…

- Unknown
A man's journey…is never done…

Dark Souls 2 Benhart of Jugo Trivia

  • The easiest method of obtaining his gear/achievement is widely debated, so multiple methods are mentioned here.
  • Summoning Benhart in Memory of Jeigh to fight the Giant Lord after talking with him in Memory of Orro is perhaps the easiest method to get his gear. To reset and allow another summon in Memory of Jeigh, use an ascetic on The Place Unbeknownst bonfire after killing the Giant Lord on the current intensity. The main issue with this method is that Benhart (and most NPC phantoms for that matter) tends to be incredibly stupid when trying to make him survive a fight (Lucatiel on ng+ Sinner...) , which is problematic in the Memory of Jeigh because of the constant fireballs, rolling statue head, and the damage the Giant Lord inflicts with his skyscraper-esque sword, but if Benhart survives to the end, it is undoubtedly the fastest method.
  • Dying can be used to reset the encounter should Benhart die before you are able to kill the boss. The Homeward Bone, Homeward Miracle, and the Aged Feather can all be used to reset the encounter should Benhart die. Returning you to your last visited bonfire in the process.
  • Alternatively, you can also use Bonfire Ascetics to reset the Prowling Magus and the Congregation boss fight three times to get the items. This is an easy fight where it is unlikely either you or Benhart will die. There is a bit of a distance between the boss and Benhart's summon sign, so the walking back and forth is the longest part. It is also advisable you clear out all the enemies leading from his sign to the boss fight before you summon him, just to be safe. Unfortunately, AI stupidity also comes into play here, as Benhart seems apt to fall off the ledge where the boulders come down, making this method, while easy if done well, incredibly annoying to watch your achievement walk off a ledge multiple times.
  • Bonfire Ascetics can also be used to fight the Looking Glass Knight multiple times. Be sure to equip the Red Eye Ring as the Looking Glass Knight will focus Benhart when he gets low health.
  • As with any NPC phantom, any combination of these methods will result in the desired effect, it just depends on what you believe to be the fight both you and Benhart can survive consistently with increasing difficulty. So long as you and Benhart complete 3 of any of these fights (or 2 of one and 1 of another, etc.) and he survives each, he will reward you with his gear and achievement if spoken to in the area behind the Pursuer fight.

Just farmed magus with bonfire ascetics until I'd successfully beaten them 3 times with Jugo alive, then went to speak with him at his Drangleic Castle location and he gave me his gear. It seems he doesn't have to be in the Memory of Orro to complete this achievement...

      • Anonymous

Can someone explain what the hell is he doing in a memory of a giant? that's like the most random spot ever

        • Anonymous

Easiest way to get his achievement is to talk to him in Shaded Woods, summon him for Congregation, use Bonfire Ascetic on Royal Army Campsite bonfire in Brightstone Cove Tseldora (must have killed the Duke's Dear Freja before) and summon him for Congregation again. After that, progress the game until you reach Drangleic Castle, talk to him again and summon him for Looking Glass Knight. Benhart is a fairly weak summon unfortunately, but he can still survive NG+ Congregation and NG Looking Glass Knight quite easily. Once you've beaten Looking Glass Knight, you can immediately travel to Forest of the Fallen Giants and talk to him behind the Pursuer boss arena to collect his gear and unlock the achievement.

Shitty npc with shitty questline and shitty sword. Fake dwarf with a fake sword. Why is he even in the game. You have cool npcs like Lucy and Rosie and even that sad knight dude or a freaking polygon cat and then you have this mistake of a npc. Bleah

            • Anonymous

I completed his questline and was rewarded his gear and sword. No achievement was given. When I reset at bonfire and talk to him again he just repeats his old dialog that I’m not worthy for his sword. But I already have it. This is on Xbox. Anyone experienced this issue with achievements not popping. Same problem with ladder guy, have his gear but no achievement.

              • Anonymous

SotFS: summoning him for the throne watchers / nash COUNTS as a victory. I had 1 summon left to inherit his equipment and he gave it to me after the battle.

                • Anonymous

Can u stop dying for 5 seconds? omg, completing his questline as a casters are the worst! redeye ring doesn't work & he hit like ****. Why npcs quest have to be tied to boss summon

                  • Anonymous

If you complited boss fighter and memories it is possible that Benhard will vanish from pursuer boss location. In that case go into memory of orro and talk to him there. You will receive his gear.

                    • Anonymous

Would have been neat if Scholar of the First Sin added extra dialogue for Benhart if you have the actual Moonlight Greatsword equipped when speaking to him. Wouldn’t contribute anything to the story, probably, but a neat thought nonetheless

Its actually 100% cannon no lies telling the truth that this guy is ludwig the holy blade before he turned into a horse.

                        Source - trust me

I did Magnus looking glass knight and the king giant he’s in the memory but whenever I talk to him he repeats the same thing and does not give me the armour am I missing something ?

                          • Anonymous

Magus is also convenient because you'll farm Titanite Slab in the process, and it's the easiest of the fights, so I don't see any downsides to this method.

                            • Anonymous

"Throne of Want. Next to the fog gate, where he can assist with all three back-to-back final boss fights. (None of these fights count towards Benhart's questline/trophy.)"

This is not true, I summoned him for Nashandra and it *did* count for his questline. I goofed and forgot to summon him for the Giant Lord, so he wouldn't give me his equipment in Memory of Orro (Yes, I exhausted his dialogue), but after summoning him for Nashandra and coming back to the memory, he did. I had already cleared Throne Watched and Defender before, and Benhart died against Aldia, so Nashandra was the only boss he assisted me with.

Wouldn't recommend though, she deals a ton of damage against NPCs since they don't dodge anything, so taking her down before Benhart died was a pretty close call. And you don't have an opportunity to send him away before Aldia shows up, so Aldia will have boosted health.

"If you summon Benhart for at least 3 of the boss fights that he can be summoned for, and he stays alive until the boss is defeated, afterwards while speaking to him in the Memory of Orro will award you with the following: [sword, achievement,...]"

this is partially true, while you do need the three summons and wins, you don't need to talk to him in the memory to get the set, you don't need to talk to all of his locations either, you can simply speak to him once after unpetrifying the girl, do the three summons then talk to him at the castle where he'll be chilling right next to the bonfire

(in my case i only talked to him the first time at the Shaded woods entrance after killing Nashandra, did Prowling Magus and the Congregation 3 time then talked to him at the castle and i got the set + achievement)

                                • Anonymous

Benhart of Jugo an absolute unit the guy went to Drangleic just to freaking train he's not even undead as he still has memories of who he was where came from he even reached the throne of want on his own world as he left his summon sign there.

                                  • Anonymous

Don't forget if you have the Name Engraved ring on his or any NPC summon sign for that matter will not show up. Just PSA, I'm not sure if I read that anywhere on here. It's a common sense thing but something you could totally forget about if you aren't paying attention. I know I and a friend were playing trying to get him the achievement and his sign wouldn't show up even after an ascetic was burned. Eventually we figured it out. Lol

                                    • recommended method way I do it:
shaded woods, talk, brightstone cove, summon at tent first bonfire, defeat prowling magus. go back to first bonefire, use ascetic, summon him again, defeat prowling magus again.
drangleic central bonfire, talk, summon him just outside fog gate at king's pass, defeat looking glass knight.
fast forward, when you meet him at pursuer's stage at forest of fallen giants, he will give gears and achievement outside the dream.

                                      good luck & godspeed

                                      • Anonymous

has anyone else noticed the similarites between Benhart and Solaire? Knights of a forgotten land, wielding an ordinary sword they believe to be special, both are self made warriors whos strength comes from training, and both of them help you along your journey by allowing you to summon them and they are always in the oddest places.

                                        • Anonymous

If you have summoned him for Prowling Magus, Elana and the Looking Glass Knight and talk to him while he is sitting after the Pursuer arena (not inside the memory), he will already give you his equipment. You don't have to talk to him inside the memory for that.

                                          • Anonymous

Summoned Benhart for Prowling Magus fight 3x (used bonfire ascetic). Didn’t have to progress to memory or Orro to get the achievement and equipment, Benhart was sitting right after Twin Dragonriders fight in Dragleic Castle

                                            • I talked to him at the Pursuer arena before summoning him three times, after that i summoned him to fight Elana, but when i went back to the Forest of Fallen Giants to gte the sword he wasn't there. He didn't die during the bossfight so where the hell is he?

                                              • Anonymous

Is it me or are all enemies hardier after an ascetic in Majula? Suddenly upon return of previously cleared areas, the mobs are like twice the aggro and hp

                                                • Anonymous

So wait you mean to ****ing tell me this achievement is locked behind co op that requires me summon him for giant lord or ****ING ELANA?

                                                  Message: "I can't take this"

                                                  • This madlad survived every boss we did together on a magic pixel of health and I mean all, the giant lord, the magnus, the looking glass even the queen in sunken king

hes got acctual magic in that sword i swear

(sadly he did not survie aldia but he did beat nat) though as they dont count for his quest it dont matter
also if you want 2 of his sword do sunken king before drangelic then you'll meet him after the pursuer area and get his gear, then you can kill him in the memory for a 2nd one

                                                    • Anonymous

A money obsessed merchant see a potentially legendary sword and says it's a fake and that stands as a confirmation... Lol

                                                      • Anonymous

If you don't care about his storyline or achievement, and you only want his gear, just go ahead and kill him, this quest a serious PITA

                                                        • "DLC bosses do not appear to add to this count"? i'm pretty sure he give me his equipment after he survived magus, mirror knight and elana

                                                          • Anonymous

A really simple way to get this gear is to just Murder him. Ruthlessly, with Chain Backstabs, at SL1 with a dagger.

                                                            • Anonymous

DLC bosses are accounted for the trophy. I summoned him twice on Looking Glass Knight, and once in Elana, and I got his equipment before I hit Memory of Orro.

                                                              • Anonymous

I summoned him for prowling magus, looking glass knight, and watcher and defender, but hes still not giving me his set. Did I do something wrong?

                                                                • "DLC bosses do not appear to add to this count." This is incorrect. I summoned him for the Squalid Queen as my third fight with him and he finally coughed up his gear. The other two fights were the Looking Glass Knight and the Prowling Magus. The Squalid Queen was definitely the hardest one to keep him alive. When she summoned her golden friend, I had to agro him away from her and the NPC summons to keep him from clubbing them to death while they wailed on her. This worked for a while till Queenie decided to teleport next to me which brought everyone together in a giant mess of attacks. This is what usually kills off Ellie, but Benhart was usually better about getting out of the way. Even so, Golden boy finally went down with Queenie having very little health left. At that point it was a race to kill her before Benhart died (who wasn't looking too good). When I dropped her, Benhart had about 2 pixels of health left on his HP bar.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

Will he appear after the pursuer arena before you get the ashen mist heart? And if so can you get his gear there?

                                                                        • Anonymous

He seems like the guy, that is only here for the fun and adventure, but then he gives you the sword, his most valuable possession, and chooses to rest for all eternity inside a fading memory. I'm actually interested in his story now.

                                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                                  • Anonymous

I wonder how many people have actually asked how Benhart got in the memory of Orro in the first place and also wondered if the statues in the Pursuer Boss fight look strangely similar to Benhart... Probably just coincidences but still something to think about.

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        • Anonymous

Would this count as a death for him even though this fight does not count towards his quest line? At this point I had 2/3 fights done with him and assumed it wouldn't matter if he died, only that he survived Nash or any other boss
